Establishing an escape scheme and
exercising for emergencies
- Establish an escape scheme which includes all doors
and windows, and at least two escape routes out of
each room.
- Inform your family of the escape scheme and explain
what to do in case of fire.
- Determine a place in the open as the meeting place in
case of fire.
- Make all members of your family familiar with the
noise of the smoke alarm system and indicate that all
have to leave the house as soon as this noise is heard.
- Make a fire alarm exercise at least every 6 months.
Exercises will help you to test you escape scheme
prior to an emergency. It may happen that you can't help
your children, thus it is important to know what to do.
Immediate actions in case of alarm
- Immediately leave your home or apartment in
accordance with the escape scheme established by
you. Each second will count, thus do not loose time by
putting on clothes or looking for valuables.
- When leaving a room, do not open the door unless
having touched the surface. If hot or if you see smoke
flowing in from under the door, do not open this door!
Use another escape route instead. If the door surface
is cold, press your shoulder against it, open the door
slightly and be prepared to shut the door immediately
if heat and smoke penetrate.
