How it works: The torque required to hold a load by the (3) pinion shaft, is transformed into a
clamping force on the brake friction disk (17) and pawl ratchet plate (18) by the rotating screw
connection between the pinion shaft (3) and the brake driver (20). The larger the load, the more
screw clamping force is applied to the brake. The double pawls (14) and pawl ratchet plate (18),
clamped between the friction disc (17), ground the brake torque to the hoist frame (12). The
ratcheting pawls allow one way rotation in the pull/lift direction. To lower the load, force must be
applied by the lever handle (44) to the brake driver (20), opposite of the torque generated by the
load, allowing the brake clamping force to lessen, slip the friction disc and allow the load to pay
out. The brake responds proportionally to torque so there is precise control for inching loads.A
light spring (16) is present to apply a small force opposing the clamping force. When the hoist is
not loaded this allows the brake to release when the "Free Chain Knob" (28) is turned in the
