Package Contents
• ExpressCard
• CD with driver
• Operating Instructions
Features
• ExpressCard34 type
• Short model, so the ExpressCard can remain in most laptops, for example when the com-
puter is to be transported.
• One USB3.0 port (backwards compatible with USB 2.0/1.1)
Driver Installation
Install the driver first, before inserting the card into the laptop.
• Insert the data carrier enclosed into an appropriate drive on your laptop. If your laptop
does not have a CD/DVD drive, the driver can also be copied to a USB stick, for exam-
ple, and then to the laptop.
• Start the setup programme; at the time these instructions were written, it was located in
the directory „USB3.0 Host" and in the directory „NEC".
• Follow all of the instructions. Windows may need to be restarted after completing the
installation.
Inserting the ExpressCard into the Computer
Please note that the card is a „genuine" fast ExpressCard.
This means that the ExpressCard does not function with USB/ExpressCard
adapters (e.g. to test an ExpressCard at a USB port of a „normal" computer).
Hardware detection will not take place with such adapters.
Only use the ExpressCard in a laptop with a fully wired ExpressCard slot, and
not with such an adapter.
• Correctly insert the ExpressCard into an ExpressCard slot on the laptop. If your laptop
has several ports, it does not matter which of the ports you use. Consult your laptop's
operating manual for how to insert and remove an ExpressCard.
• Windows will then recognise the new hardware and complete the driver installation.
• The USB3.0 port on the card is now available for connecting to appropriate hardware.
Power Supply for USB Devices
The power for USB devices connected to the ExpressCard is supplied either by the laptop
(e.g. when USB sticks, USB webcams or similar are connected to the ExpressCard) or by
the power adapter, which is enclosed with the USB device (e.g. when connecting a
8.9cm/3.5" USB hard disc).
However, if USB devices with a higher power requirement (e.g. a 6.35cm/2.5" USB hard
disc) are to be connected without their own power adapter, the laptop's power supply may
be overstretched (the hard disc is not recognised, or does not start, or it only makes quiet
clicking noises), or the battery life of the laptop might be considerably decreased.
If such problems occur, the USB device in question cannot be used when directly
connected to the ExpressCard.
In this case, use a USB3.0 hub with its own power adapter. The power is then
supplied to the USB device by the USB hub and not by the laptop.
Connecting a USB Device to the ExpressCard
www.conrad.com
• USB2.0/1.1 device
It is possible, of course, to operate all „old" USB2.0/1.1 devices with a USB3.0 port.
Version 09/10
Simply connect the USB device to the USB3.0 port on the ExpressCard.
°
Use a conventional USB2.0/1.1 connection cable to connect the devices.
USB2.0/1.1 devices do not become any faster when operated via a USB3.0 port.
However, if the USB2.0 controller in the laptop works relatively slowly, it is possible, for
example, for a USB2.0 hard disc to transfer data faster via a USB3.0 port on the
ExpressCard.
• USB3.0 device
In order to connect a USB3.0 device to the ExpressCard, a USB3.0 cable is required. At
first glance, the USB-A plug looks similar to a USB2.0/1.1 plug, however, it has additio-
nal internal connector pins.
The USB-B plug on a USB3.0 cable has a different shape.
A USB3.0 hard disc enclosure with USB3.0 connector can also be operated on a
USB3.0/2.0/1.1 port, via a conventional USB2.0/1.1 cable. Faster data transfer is thus
not possible.
In order to use the fast data transfer provided by USB3.0, not only a USB3.0 controller is
required (e.g. the ExpressCard) but also a USB3.0 device and an appropriate USB3.0
cable.
USB3.0 provides a theoretical data transfer of 3GBit (approx. 6000MByte/s). The transfer
speed in practice depends on the devices involved in the data transfer (internal and exter-
nal hard disk), the type of data (many small files or a few large files) and many other
factors.
Disconnecting the USB Device from the ExpressCard
and Removing the ExpressCard
• Complete any data transfer to the USB device, before disconnecting the USB cable from
the ExpressCard.
In Windows, the connection to certain USB devices (e.g. USB hard discs) can be discon-
nected via an arrow symbol in the menu bar. Windows then closes all open files and the
USB cable or USB device can be disconnected without risk.
• Please refer to your laptop's operating manual for how to disconnect an ExpressCard
from the computer. Usually, the card has to be slid into the laptop a little bit so that an
special internal mechanical system ejects the card.
Disposal

However, complete all data transfers to the USB device as described above
and disconnect the USB device from the ExpressCard.

Please dispose of the device when it is no longer of use, according to the cur-
rent statutory requirements.
