Operating instructions for GRAUPNER INLINE motors
Congratulations on your choice of a GRAUPNER INLINE motor; this is an innovative product of the highest quality.
INLINE motors have been developed and manufactured to be extremely practical power plants, and provide outstanding performance in radio-
controlled models.
Please be sure to observe the following safety notes:
Read right through the operating instructions before you attempt to run the motor for the first time. If you ever dispose of the product, these
•
operating instructions must also be passed on to the new owner. These power plants must always be operated in conjunction with suitable
speed controllers designed for brushless motors (see Specification table). It is not possible to run the motors by connecting them directly to a
power source, and any such attempt will completely ruin the product.
The motor may only be run when mounted securely in a model. As soon as a drive battery is connected, there is a chance that the motor
•
will burst into life (e.g. through an error in operation or an electrical fault). This means: when a battery is connected, proceed with the greatest
caution.
An electric motor, particularly when fitted with a rotor or an aircraft / boat propeller, is capable of causing serious and possibly lethal injury.
•
Parts coming loose and flying off at high speed can also cause serious harm. Initial test-runs should always be carried out without the
propeller fitted.
The motor should only be run in situations where the possibility of personal injury and damage to property can be eliminated. The only area
•
where persons may safely stand when the motor is running is behind the rotational plane of the rotor or aircraft / boat propeller. Please
also observe the safety notes included with the propeller or ducted fan unit. If the motor should be damaged (e.g. due to mechanical or
electrical defect, damp etc.) do not use it again, as the motor could suddenly fail at any moment.
These motors should only be used in circumstances where no discharge of static electricity can occur.
•
These motors should be powered exclusively by typical batteries used in modelling. Batteries must be fitted with suitable connectors. The
•
permissible nominal voltage is stated on the motor label (e.g. 7.4 V). It is not permissible to run the motor from a mains power supply. On no
account connect the motor electrically to a 230 V AC mains power source.
The motor's use in man-carrying aircraft or other vehicles is prohibited.
•
Opening or dismantling the motor invalidates the guarantee.
•
Read the operating instructions supplied with the brushless speed controller before connecting the motor to the controller.
•
Installing and operating the motor
INLINE motors should be installed in the model using the retaining screws supplied.
Note that electric motors are ruined if they become too hot. INLINE motors are safe at temperatures up to 80° C, but above this level the motor may
be damaged. For this reason it is essential to avoid excessive temperatures. The motor will overheat if it is overloaded, and it can be overloaded by
fitting too large a propeller (aircraft or boat), stalling the motor shaft (preventing it from turning) or running it for an excessive length of time. If you are
in any doubt, always use a smaller propeller (aircraft, boat or ducted fan) for initial tests, and check the motor's temperature during the run. It is
important to provide effective cooling: wherever possible drill holes in the motor bulkhead lining up with those in the motor flange. Please note that
space must be provided around the motor inside the fuselage to provide clearance for the power cables. The motor length is indicated by the type
designation, e.g. the case of the COMPACT 370 is 37 mm long.
Never open the motor, as there are sensitive parts inside which could easily be damaged. There is never a need to open these motors as they
feature no carbon brushes, and therefore require no maintenance.
When building the model it is advisable to arrange for the receiver to be installed as far as possible away from the motor, speed controller and
power cables. The aerial should not be routed past the motor and its high-current cables. If the layout of the model makes this impossible, these
components should be shielded with aluminium sheet or foil. We recommend the use of a trailing or whip aerial, as this increases the operational
reliability of the radio control system. If you still encounter reception problems, the cause is likely to be a poorly matched combination of
components, or unsuitable installation of the receiving system components.
Motor cooling
It is important to provide adequate cooling for the motor in the model. These motors can cope with high loads but only for brief periods, and the
motor's temperature must never exceed 80° C. After each run the power unit must be allowed to cool down to ambient temperature. The Mini Infra-
