Safe Practice
Introduction
Gas-charged accumulators are approved for use within the
European Union. Accumulators with a capacity of greater than
1 litre are marked with the CE logo.
These accumulators must not be used with a Group 1 fluid.
These diaphragm accumulators, classified according to
PED 97/23/EU article 3 paragraph 3 or risk categories I or II
depending on volume and pressure, are designed to contain
Group 2 (non-hazardous) fluids. They have been subjected
to conformity assessment procedures in accordance with the
European Directive 97/23/EC concerning pressure equipment.
Parker's diaphragm accumulators are designed, manufactured
and tested to the highest standards, to guarantee their safety.
The user must follow strictly the instructions given in this manual.
Parker Hannifin does not accept any responsibility for damage
to persons or property, or for any consequences, eg: loss of
operation, resulting from the failure to observe these instructions.
Delivery, Handling and Storage Conditions
Delivery
Diaphragm accumulators are delivered either:
– pre-charged with nitrogen to the pressure specified in
catalogue HY07-1248, ADE Diaphragm Accumulators;
– pre-charged with nitrogen to a pressure calculated to meet
the conditions of use for immediate service.
The pre-charge value is indicated on a label attached to the
accumulator. Depending on the size and quantity ordered, the
accumulators are delivered on pallets or in cartons.
Handling
The original packaging is suitable for general handling and
storage of accumulators. Where necessary, suitable lifting gear
should be used to support the weight of the accumulator(s).
Protect the gas port from impact. Handle with care.
Storage
Diaphragm accumulators may be stored in any position.
Accumulators of up to 0.5 litre volume may be stacked four units
high; larger units should be stacked no more than two units high.
Storage conditions should be according to the table on page 3.
Do not expose to heat or flames. Storage life should not exceed
six years, due to the deterioration of elastomeric parts.
Markings on the Shell of the Accumulator
Because of its classification according to PED 97/23/EU article 3
paragraph 3 or risk categories I or II depending on volume and
pressure, the accumulator shell bears the following markings:
– manufacturer's logo
– part number
– year of production
– serial number
– maximum allowable pressure PS in bar
– allowable temperature range TS in degrees Celsius
– volume V in litres
– CE logo (only above 1 litre volume) with identification number
of the notified body
– label with pre-charge gas pressure in bar
Operating Instructions
ADE Diaphragm Accumulators
The following are strictly prohibited:
– changing the markings without the prior authorization of the
accumulator shell manufacturer;
– engraving or hard stamping in the upper or lower curved
surfaces of the accumulator.
Where additional markings for specific acceptance conditions
are required, these will be provided in the low stress area after
initial assembly.
Installation
Before installation, it is important to carry out a visual inspection of
the diaphragm accumulator to detect any damage.
The accumulator may be mounted in any position.
It is strongly recommended that a Parker ASB accumulator safety
block is used with the accumulator. This ensures that users and
equipment are protected from damage due to pressure spikes. In
addition, it allows quick and safe accumulator maintenance through
easy shut-off and discharge. See Parker catalogue HY07-1241/UK
or consult your nearest sales office for further information.
In addition:
– Beware of parts which may be ejected as a result of a
ruptured diaphragm: keep hands and body out of line of port.
– Check the environmental conditions and, if necessary, protect
from heat, electrical or magnetic fields, lightning, damp etc.
– Allow a space of 200mm above the gas port to permit access
for the charging and gauging apparatus.
– Install such that no abnormal force is brought to bear on the
pipework connected directly or indirectly to the accumulator.
– Leave all markings in clear view.
– Secure the shell of the accumulator to a support, or enclose
it so that movement in the event of failure of its connection to
the hydraulic installation is restrained or prevented.
– If a Parker safety block is not employed, ensure that the
accumulator is connected to the hydraulic circuit using
appropriate connecting devices.
– Check that the fluid is compatible with the equipment.
– Check that the maximum allowable pressure of the accum-
ulator is equal to or greater than that of the hydraulic circuit.
– Observe the temperature and pressure limits and, if
necessary, fit a rupture disk or valve to protect against
damage from overpressure.
The following are strictly prohibited:
– Welding, riveting or screwing any parts to the accumulator;
– Carrying out any operation that could affect the mechanical
properties of the accumulator;
– Using the accumulator as a structural element: it must not be
subject to any stress or load;
– Altering the accumulator without the prior agreement of the
manufacturer;
– Using a Group 1 (hazardous) fluid with apparatus designed
and manufactured for a fluid in Group 2.
