Example 3: If the optical link has 2dB optical attenuation and the following must be transmitted:
- 11 analogue terrestrial channels
- 6 digital terrestrial channels
- 30 satellite transponders
The critical point is always the transmission of analogue terrestrial channels. So the usual calculations
are made. Maximum input power is approximately 97dBµV. The resulting SNR is 60dB and the output level
is 98dBµV. As a general rule, digital channels (both terrestrial and satellite) should be 10dB - 15dB less than
analogue ones. So, the best choice is to set the DTT and SAT channels to 87dBµV - 82dBµV
CAUTION: Disconnect the transmitter power supply before cleaning optical connectors.
Optical connectors are similar to spectacle lenses and therefore their performance can be reduced by dust
particles, finger marks and scratches. The surface of the connector ferrule can be inspected using a
microscope.
SC-APC connector & adapter
To clean an optical connector:
1. Open the connections.
2. Apply a drop of cleaning liquid (pure alcohol) on the edge of the ferrule and then remove any particles by
using an air spray.
3. Before re-inserting the connectors clean the adapter by applying a drop of cleaning liquid into the central
hole and removing it immediately by blowing air through it.
4. Re-insert the connectors into the adapter avoiding any physical contact to the ferrules with fingers or any
other surface.
Notes :
- Open connectors/adapters must always be protected using their caps.
- Never open connections in dusty, damp or wet conditions.
- Use only pure alcohol as a cleaning liquid.
- Scratched connectors can damage other connectors; they must be replaced!
