In conjunction with the chip ejector, which can be
tilted to either side, the symmetrical arrangement of
the handles means the chain saw can be used
equally easily by left-handed and right-handed peo-
ple.
Measuring 300 x 506 mm (11 13/16 x 19 15/16 in.),
the base plate permits safe and reliable guidance of
the machine on the workpiece.
Designed for executing parallel cuts up to 530 mm
(20 7/8 in.), a fence is provided that can be used on
either side of the machine. The fence is also
designed to be used rotated through 180°, thus
enlarging the supporting surface.
The chain bar and riving knife/splitter can also be
slanted backward by 10°. When making straight cuts
through a series of workpieces laid out in a row, this
ensures that the cut remains absolutely true when
passing from one workpiece to the next.
The automatic chain lubrication with adjustable deliv-
ery rate and large integrated tank ensures that the
saw chain has a long service life. Developed specifi-
cally for this machine, the special saw chain ensures a
low cutting pressure even with large cutting depths,
thus allowing the machine to be advanced easily.
Further features designed to make the machine
easy to use include the 10 m (32.8 ft) mains cable,
giving the saw a large operating radius, and the
automatic blowing free of the cutting plane, which
provides an unobstructed view of the marking.

Safety devices

When designing the carpenter's chain saw, all the
necessary measures were taken to eliminate haz-
ards emanating from the machine or to minimize
these risks as far as possible within the context of
using the machine for its intended purpose.
The safety devices described in this
manual are essential prerequisites of
safe machine operation. They must
not be removed or put out of action:
The part of the saw chain above the base plate
not used for cutting is protected against contact
by permanent guards. The descending part of
the saw chain is protected by the riving knife/
splitter. The latter also helps to guide the
machine reliably, thus preventing the saw from
jamming while cutting is in progress.
The measures taken to prevent machine kickback
include the special design of the chain saw with
cutting depth limitation, and the riving knife/splitter.
The permanent guard plate fitted at the bottom
end of the chain bar stops the machine being
used for plunge cuts and thus prevents the poten-
tial risk of machine recoil during this operation.
The switch incorporated in the handle has a
starting lock-off button, thus preventing the saw
from being switched on accidentally.
When the switch is released, the machine is
automatically switched off and the saw chain
brought to a standstill by the integrated automatic
brake within approx. 1 second. This largely rules
out any contact with the decelerating chain.
The large base plate provides a good support for
the machine on the workpiece. This support can
be further improved by means of the parallel guide
fence, which can be used rotated through 180°.
The chip ejector, which is directed away from
the user, and the blowing free of the marking
ensure unobstructed vision.
An electrical hazard is excluded by the
machine's protective insulation in accordance
with class II of the European EN 60745-1 stand-
ard.

Use according to intended purpose

The MAFELL carpenter's chain saw
ZS 260 E is intended exclusively for
ripping and cross cutting operations
on solid timber with a maximum thick-
ness of up to 260 mm 10 1/4 in.), in
conjunction exclusively with the spe-
cial saw chain approved by MAFELL
for this purpose, whereby base plate
3 (ill. 1) of the machine must rest on
the workpiece. The machine is
designed exclusively for one-man
operation. The machine must be held
and guided by the two handles 1 and
2 provided for this purpose.
Any other use beyond this scope is considered as
failure to comply with the intended purpose. The
manufacturer is not liable for any damage caused as
a result of this; the risk is borne solely by the user.
Furthermore, the machine is not suitable for opera-
tion outdoors in the rain or in areas subject to explo-
sion hazards.
