Operation (cont'd)
Position the power unit on firm level ground.
Pre-Start
1. Check engine oil level. Running the engine with a
low oil level can cause engine damage. The oil alert
system will automatically stop the engine before the
engine oil level falls below safe limits. However, to
avoid the inconvenience of an unexpected shut-
down, always check the engine oil level before
startup.
Refer to the Engine Owner's Manual for correct oil
type and checking instructions.
2. Check fuel level. Refer to the Engine Owner's
Manual for fuel recommendations.
3. Check hydraulic reservoir oil level. Fill to FULL level
as shown on hydraulic fluid level decal. Refer to
"Recommended Hydraulic Fluids" for correct
hydraulic fluid.
4. Check the air filter. A dirty air filter will restrict
air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine
performance.
5. Verify that all current maintenance has been
performed on the power unit. Refer to the
"Maintenance" section.
Starting the Power Unit
1. If the fuel tank is equipped with a fuel valve, be
sure the valve is in the OPEN or ON position before
attempting to start the engine.
2. To start a cold engine,
pull the choke knob
out to the CLOSED
position. To start a
warm engine, leave
the choke knob in the
OPEN position.
3. Move the throttle lever
away from the SLOW
position, about 1/3 of
the way to the FAST
position.
4. Turn the engine switch
to the ON position.

5. Operate the starter by turning the key to the START
position and holding it there until the engine starts.
If the engine fails to start within 5 seconds, release
the key and wait at least ten seconds before operat-
ing the starter again.
Note: Using the elec-
tric starter for more
than five seconds at a
time will overheat the
starter motor and can
damage it.
6. When the engine
starts, release the key,
allowing it to return to
the ON position.
7. If the choke knob
has been pulled to
the CLOSED position
to start the engine,
gradually push it to the
OPEN position as the
engine warms up.
Hour Meter
After the engine is started, the hour meter counts the
elapsed time of the engine in use. It will not count the
elapsed time of the engine operation by just turning the
engine switch ON.
Stopping the Engine
To stop the engine in an emergency, simply turn the
engine switch to the OFF position. Under normal condi-
tions, use the following procedure.
1. Move the throttle lever to the SLOW position.
2. Turn the engine switch to the OFF position.
3. Turn the fuel valve to the CLOSED or OFF position.
Lifting the Power Unit
Use the lifting eye and appropriate lifting equipment.
Make sure all components used to lift this power
unit are rated for 159 kg (350 lb) and are securely
attached to the frame of the power unit. Inadequate
components may fail and cause the power unit to
fall, resulting in injury or property damage.
Stop the power unit engine before lifting. Take care
when attaching the lifting device (chain, strap, etc.) to
the lifting eye so as not to damage the power unit.
