Before Use

WARNING: Ensure the tool is disconnected from the power supply before attaching or
changing any accessories, or making any adjustments.
Assembling the mini bench grinder
Note: This machine should always be securely mounted to a strong, stable workbench
Attaching the eye shields
• The grinder should never be used without the supplied Eye Shields (15). Attempting
to use the grinder without the Eye Shields, or with the Eye Shields incorrectly fitted, is
highly dangerous and could result in severe injury to yourself or others around you
• Attach one Eye Shield to the Eye Shield Bracket (5), using the Eye Shield Fasteners (19)
and the Eye Shield Nuts (20), as shown in (Image I), then repeat for the other side
Attaching the tool rests
• The grinder should never be used without the supplied Tool Rests (18). Attempting to
use the grinder without the Tool Rests, or with the Tool Rests incorrectly fitted, is highly
dangerous and could result in severe injury to yourself or others around you
1. Take the Tool Rest Fasteners (25), and place the Flat Washer (22) and the Crush Washer
(21) over the Collet Holder (Image II)
2. Position the Tool Rest (18) against the Tool Rest Bracket (3), with the angled edge
furthest away from the wheel
3. Fasten using the Tool Rest Fasteners (Image III)
4. Repeat for the other side
Note: The Tool Rests can be adjusted to best suit the work to be performed. Always ensure
that the Tool Rests are securely tightened before use.
Note: As the Grinding Wheel (4) wears, it will be necessary to adjust the Tool Rests. The
gap between the Grinding Wheel and the Tool Rest should be less than 3mm at all times.
Fitting the flexible rotary tool
1. Slot the squared drive shaft of the Male Connector (1) into the centre of the Female
Connector (10) (Image IV)
Note: The rotary tools connector is left-hand threaded, so in order to tighten, the Male
Connector must be turned anti-clockwise on to the Female Connector.
2. Tighten the Male Connector on to the left-hand threaded Female Connector
3. At the Collet Holder (14), secure the tool from turning by putting the Hex Key (17)
through the small securing hole below the Collet Holder (Image V)
4. Insert the desired Collet (24) into the Collet Holder (Image VI) and loosely tighten the
Collar (23) on to the end
5. Insert the desired hobby tool accessory into the Collet
6. Fasten down the Collar using the Spanner (16)
7. Remove the Hex Key from the securing hole
Pre-operational checks
• Always check that all parts or attachments are secure, and that rotating parts will not
contact guards or machine case
• Ensure that any ventilation holes are not obscured in any way. Hot air may be emitted
from the machine when in use
Operation
WARNING: Always wear suitable personal protective equipment, including eye, hearing and
respiratory protection, when operating this machine.
WARNING: Always unplug the grinder from the mains supply before attempting to fit or
replace any attachment. Never fit any attachment with a maximum speed lower than the
no load speed of the machine.
WARNING: Be aware that the cast metal motor housing may get hot during use.
Switching on and off
Note: Do not switch the machine on or off when under load. Always allow the motor
to reach its full speed before applying a load, and to stop completely before leaving
unattended.
• To switch the machine on, press the 'I' on the On/Off Switch (7)
• To switch the machine off, press the 'O' on the On/Off Switch
Adjusting tool speed
WARNING: ALWAYS set the speed according to the requirements of the accessory fitted
and the material of the workpiece.
• Use the Speed Control Dial (8) to control the rotation speed
Note: The higher the number on the dial the faster the spindle rotates.
Grinding
• DO NOT push the workpiece into the grinding wheel as you grind causing the grinding
wheel to slow. Instead allow the grinding wheel to maintain full speed and apply very
minimal pressure
• DO NOT use grinding wheels that are damaged or have worn down more than 25%
from their original size
• Always hold work against the Tool Rest (18) and grip with both hands. Position yourself
so you have a comfortable grip on the workpiece without being excessively close to the
grinder. It is critical your clothes have no loose strands of material especially on your
arms and close to your hands that could be caught by the grinding wheel forcing your
hand into the grinding mechanism
• DO NOT attempt to work on material that is too small to grip securely
• Always refer to wheel manufacturer's literature before use. Check that the wheel is
suitable for the material that you intend to work
• Metal grinding may produce sparks. Ensure that you are properly protected, and that
any flammable materials are removed from the work area
• When grinding, the workpiece will quickly become hot. It may be necessary to quench
the work in water to prevent heat damage. The fine-grade grinding wheel will produce
less heat and may be safer to use for some materials that are easily heat damaged
• Some materials may contain trace amount of toxic materials. If you are unsure of the
composition of the workpiece, it is recommended to remove grinding dust frequently
and always wear suitable respiratory protection
• Metallic dust can damage other tools if allowed to accumulate by vents and be drawn
in when the tool is operated
• When grinding has finished for the session, remove dust and vacuum the work area,
and the tool
Rotary tool handling
• Hold the tool securely, keeping hands well away from rotating parts. For most purposes,
it is most convenient to grip the tool like a pen
• Practise using the tool with scrap material before starting a job. Be aware that different
accessories will require different techniques, and may require different speed settings
• Applying excess pressure does not result in faster or more efficient performance. If the
pressure applied to the tool has a noticeable effect on the speed of the tool then reduce
the pressure. Overloading the tool will reduce its service life
• Always ensure that material is secure. If appropriate use a vice or clamp to hold the
work

Accessories

• A range of accessories and consumables, including a Hobby Tool Accessory Kit
105pce (349758), Grinding Wheel Set 3pce (868811), and a Cutting Disc Kit 5pce
(783161) is available from your Silverline stockist. Spare parts can be obtained from

Maintenance
WARNING: ALWAYS disconnect from the power supply before carrying out any inspection,
maintenance or cleaning.
Fitting a grinding wheel
1. Remove the two grinding wheel covers, located at either end of the bench grinder, by
removing the 6 Phillips head screws
2. Unscrew the flexible rotary tool adaptor from the drive shaft, using a 12mm spanner
(not supplied)
Note: It may be necessary to secure the drive shaft, to undo the grinding wheel retaining
nuts. To secure the drive shaft, the use of two 16mm spanners (not supplied) is required.
Both spanners should be used to hold and remove the retaining nuts.
3. Unscrew the retaining nut on the right side of the bench grinder
4. Remove the grinding/polishing wheel from the drive shaft, along with both washers
5. Unscrew the retaining nut at the opposite end of the drive shaft, and remove the
grinding/polishing wheel, along with both washers
6. Re-assemble, and fit new grinding/polishing wheels if required
Note: During re-assembly, do not over-tighten the driveshaft retaining nuts. Doing so will
make it difficult to remove when disassembled at a later date.
General inspection
• Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight
• Inspect the supply cord of the tool, prior to each use, for damage or wear. Repairs
should be carried out by an authorised Silverline service centre. This advice also applies
to extension cords used with this tool
Cleaning
• Keep your tool clean at all times. Dirt and dust will cause internal parts to wear quickly,
and shorten the machine's service life. Clean the body of your machine with a soft
brush, or dry cloth. If available, use clean, dry, compressed air to blow through the
ventilation holes
• Clean the tool casing with a soft damp cloth using a mild detergent. Do not use alcohol,
petrol or strong cleaning agents
• Never use caustic agents to clean plastic parts
Lubrication
• Slightly lubricate all moving parts at regular intervals with a suitable spray lubricant
Brushes
• Over time the carbon brushes inside the motor may become worn
• Excessively worn brushes may cause loss of power, intermittent failure, or visible
sparking
• If you suspect that the brushes may be worn, have them replaced at an authorised
Silverline service centre
Note: One set of Spare Brushes (8) is supplied with this tool.
