Usually, barriers are used in racks or switching cabinets. They can be fitted in
housings under production conditions, provided that the housing offers
sufficient protection. They can also be used in potentially explosive
atmospheres if it is ensured that the surrounding housing has been certified
for such use.
The installation must be carried out such that the intrinsic safety is not
adversely affected by the following factors:
S Risk of mechanical damage
S Unauthorized modifications or manipulation by third party personnel
S Humidity, dust, foreign matter
S Exceeding the permissible ambient temperature
S Connection of non intrinsically safe electrical circuits to intrinsically safe
circuits
Grounding of the mounting rail
The assembly rail is usually grounded by connecting both ends to the
intrinsically safe ground. This also simplifies any testing of the ground
connection.
