3. For valleys, run the heating cable 2/3 up and down the valley (add to the
previous total).
Roof valleys
Example (standard roof)
Roof edge length . . . . . . . . . 18 ft (with a 12 inch overhang and a standard
distance of 24 inches between the tip of each loop) x multiplier
(see table below)
Roof extension*. . . . . . . . . . . 18 ft x 0.5
Gutter length . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18 ft
Downspout length . . . . . . . 12 ft
Length of heating cable required:
+ Roof edge length . . . . . . . 18 ft x 2 (see multiplier table below) = 36 ft
+ Roof extension . . . . . . . . . 18 ft x 0.5 = 9 ft
+ Gutter length . . . . . . . . . . . 18 ft = 18 ft
Downspout length . . . . . . . 12 ft + 1 ft = 13 ft
Total . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 76 ft
* The roof extension is where the heating cable on the roof extends over the edge of the roof all
the way down to meet the heating cable installed in the gutter.

Roof, gutter and dowspout protection
1. Determine the best route for the heating cable on roofs and gutters.
2. Determine the layout of the heating cable to avoid mechanical damage
from ladders, etc.
3. Before installing the heating cable, make sure the roof, gutter and
downspout are free from debris, leaves, pine needles or any combustibles.
4. Check the maximum exposure temperature rating of the roof, gutter and
downspout, and select a cable that will not exceed their temperature
ratings.
5 Use hanger bracket (PT-RGCH) to support the heating cable where it
enters a downspout to prevent cable from being damaged by gutter
edge. It also can be used as a spacer in wider gutters.
6. Use roof clips (PT-RC10 or PT-RC50) to attach the heating cable to the roof.
7. Make sure that the heating cable on the roof extends all the way down
(over the edge of the roof ) to meet the heating cable installed in the
gutter; secure with UV resistant cable ties.
8. For roof valleys, measure the distance two thirds of the way up and
double it. Add this additional length to the overall cable length.
9. Attach warning labels to indicate the presence of a heating cable..
10. After installation is complete, turn the circuit breaker on to give power to
the cable.

Maintenance checks
Only a qualified individual should service or install the system.
Check yearly for any damage to the heating cable and check any ground
fault protection device for proper operation. If any damage to cable is found,
DO NOT operate until it is replaced.
