Introduction
The COM-DATA-4G, COM-DATA-WIFI,
COM-DATA-4G-WIFI and COM-DATA-4G-SD
are plug-on modules that provide a control
unit with internet access to use services such
as Eaton SecureConnect™.
Each module supports different network types:
COM-DATA-4G and COM-DATA-4G-SD:
Mobile networks (4G/3G/2G).
COM-DATA-WIFI: Wi-Fi networks (2.4GHz).
COM-DATA-4G-WIFI: Wi-Fi and mobile
networks.
In addition to providing internet access, the
COM-DATA-4G-SD also supports speech and
SMS messages. Please refer to the i-on Series
Configuration Guide for configuration details.
A control unit fitted with one of the above
modules can switch automatically between
any available communications path (4G, 3G,
2G, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, as applicable), giving
resilient, dual-path communications.
Note: Previous-generation COM-DATA-4G
modules supported 4G and 2G only.
This product must be installed only by
qualified service personnel.
Please refer to your system's configuration or
installation guide for further information.
Compatibility
COM-DATA-4G: i-on COMPACT, i-on30R,
i-on40H, i-onG2SM, i-onG3MM and i-onG3LM
with panel software version 7.02 or higher.
COM-DATA-WIFI and COM-DATA-4G-WIFI:
i-on30R, i-on40H, i-onG2SM, i-onG3MM and
i-onG3LM with panel software version 7.02
or higher.
COM-DATA-4G-SD: i-on COMPACT, i-on30R,
i-on40H, i-onG2SM, i-onG3MM and i-onG3LM
with panel software version 7.06 or higher.
Note: The modules require the COM-ADPT-02
for early versions of i-on30R and i-on40H
control units (those that use larger-footprint
plug-on modules). The COM-ADPT-02 is
available as a separate purchase.
Checking network availability
Before installing the module, check that there
is an available network with reasonable signal
strength, as follows:
For Wi-Fi, use a mobile phone or other
device that supports Wi-Fi. Place the device
near the position where the module is to
be located, and check that the device can
connect to the router.
For 4G/3G/2G, use a mobile phone or other
device that supports 4G/3G/2G and uses
the same mobile network as the SIM card
in the module. Place the device near the
position where the module is to be located,
and check that the device can connect to the
mobile network.

Using an antenna
All modules have a built-in antenna, which
is suitable for most installations where the
enclosure of the control unit is plastic. If the
control unit uses a metal enclosure or the site
has poor signal strength, use the supplied
external antenna (COM-ANT-01).
If signal strength is poor, a COM-ANT-02
high-gain antenna (available as a separate
purchase) can be used to give a better signal.
If you use the external antenna, connect it to
the module (Figure 1) and place the antenna:
Oriented vertically, as high as possible.
As far away as possible from the control
unit.
At least 1m from any metalwork, including
pipes and cables.
So that the lead runs horizontally from the
antenna for at least 250mm.
Installing the module
1. Disconnect all power to the control unit,
including the backup battery.
2. For COM-DATA-4G, COM-DATA-4G-WIFI
or COM-DATA-4G-SD, fit a registered SIM
card (Figure 1), with its PIN code disabled
(if it has one).
3. Fit the module into the control unit (Figure
1). If you are using the COM-ADPT-02,
please refer to the COM-ADPT-02 Installation
Instructions.
4. Connect power to the control unit. Connect
mains only after closing the lid of the
control unit.
5. Configure the module, as described next.
Configuring the module
Step 1 – Display the configuration options
The Installer – Communications – IP Options
menu will contain one of the following
options:
Module: 4G/3G/2G (for the COM-DATA-4G
and COM-DATA-4G-SD)
Module: Wi-Fi (for the COM-DATA-WIFI)
Module: 4G/3G/2G/Wi-Fi (for the
COM-DATA-4G-WIFI)
Display the module's configuration menu by
selecting the appropriate option above.

Note: The control unit may display "System
Busy" when selecting one of the above
options; allow up to 20 minutes for this
message to clear.
Note: If there is no Ethernet cable
connected to the control unit, set Installer –
Communications – Line Fail Response – Panel
Ethernet to Disabled.
Step 2 – Configure the antenna
Select Comms Antenna in the configuration
menu to specify whether an internal or
external antenna is being used.
Note: Control units that have a plastic
enclosure are configured to use the internal
antenna by default; those that use a metal
enclosure are configured to use an external
antenna by default.
Step 3 – Connect to the Wi-Fi network
(COM-DATA-WIFI or COM-DATA-4G-WIFI only)
Connect to the Wi-Fi network by selecting
either of the following options in the
configuration menu:
Network – Select this option if you want to
choose the network from a list of available
networks. An asterisk (*) displayed next
to a network name indicates that it is the
selected network; it does not indicate
connection status. Enter the password when
prompted; use:
1-9 keys to enter numbers and letters, as
labelled on the keys. For example, use the
"2" key to enter A, B, C or 2.
# to change between upper/lower case.
0 to enter 0, space, or other character (e.g.
"&" , "@" and "/").
to show the password when entering.
 or  to move the cursor left or right, 
to add a space, or  to delete the previous
character.
WPS – Select this option if you want to
connect using WPS. When you see "Waiting
to connect" , press the WPS button at the
router. If no connection is made within
two minutes, the control unit cancels the
procedure.
Note: The above options are also available
in the master User menu if System Options
– User Options – User access – Wi-Fi Setup is
enabled in the Installer menu.
