THEORY OF OPERATION
The X-TREME BOX™ portable power distribution center is intended for
connection to a split-phase 125/250V 50A power source. This source may
be a generator or a utility power drop. The input connection is through a
"California Standard" 3-pole 4-wire grounding twist-to-lock power inlet.
The power inlet feeds into a split-phase circuit breaker panel with (6) 1-pole
20A breakers and (1) 2-pole 30A breaker.
Each 20A circuit breaker powers a Class "A" ground fault circuit interrupter
(GFCI), which in turn powers a 2-pole 3-wire grounding 20A receptacle,
either straight-blade or twist-to-lock, depending on the catalog number. The
30A 2-pole circuit breaker powers a 3-pole 4-wire grounding 125/250V 30A
twist-to lock receptacle. The 30A receptacle does not provide ground fault
protection.
Each GFCI has a high-voltage detection circuit. If the voltage rises too high,
which can result from wiring problems such as an open neutral, the GFCI
will turn off. This helps to prevent damage to tools and equipment plugged
into the receptacle. An indicator lamp is provided on the GFCI to alert the
operator to the over-voltage condition.
TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
The status of each 20A receptacle is indicated on its associated GFCI. The
power indicator lamp, between the TEST and RESET buttons, is illuminated
if power is available at the receptacle. If a lamp is not illuminated, and the
circuit breaker is "ON", check the wiring to the unit:
If the power indicator lights on (3) GFCIs are off, one side of the split-phase
input (one of the "Hot" lines) may be missing.
If the power indicator lamps on (3) of the GFCIs are off, and the "High
Voltage" lamps on the other (3) GFCIs illuminate, the neutral line may be
missing. An open neutral may not be evident until a load is applied to one of
the receptacles.
