Preparing the Blank –
•
There are a couple of lengths and diameters available across popular brands of lip balm.
Chapstick lip balms are shorter than Burt's Bees style and most lip balms will come in one
of these two styles. Longer lip balms in shorter blanks will be usable, but there will be a
slight gap above the Dial Holder when assembled.
•
Drill 45/64" hole lengthwise through the blank. Make sure your hole is as straight and centered as possible as there are
no trimming sleeves available for this size hole.
Turning the Blank:
•
Mount the bushings and blanks according to diagram B. You may wish to add spacer
bushings for extra room to work.
When using The Mandrel Saver, there is no need for extra spacer bushings or the
•
knurled nut. Slide tailstock directly against bushings and tighten quill adjustment
until blank and bushings are secure.
If not using The Mandrel Saver, add spacer bushings until some of the threads are
•
covered and thread on the knurled nut, hand tightening against bushings to hold
all components in place.
•
Slide the Tailstock up snugly against the Mandrel shaft, inserting the live center
point into the Mandrel dimple and locking the Tailstock.
•
Hand tighten the quill adjustment on the tailstock to steady the mandrel. Do not
over tighten, it could damage mandrel shaft.
•
Using sharp tools, turn the blank down close to the bushing diameter. Turn the
barrel straight or to a profile of your choice.
•
Sand the blank down to be flush with the bushings, gradually increasing sandpaper
•
Finish the barrel using your choice of polish. Allow Sufficient time for the polish to cure—refer to polish instructions.
