Chemical Basics
Exposure to oxygen causes the surface of an aluminium conductor to immediately be covered in a non-conductive oxidation layer.
This layer must be removed in order to achieve a conductive and gas-proof connection.
Insulation length / insulation of the aluminium conductor
According to Phoenix Contact
40 mm
The oxidized layer shall be removed from the conductor end by using a scraper (e.g. electric knife).
Filing, sanding or brushing shall not be performed, since this creates the potential for small iron particles to remain, which
would cause the aluminium to disintegrate due to the electrochemical voltage potential.
Vaseline
After the oxidation layer is removed, the conductor end shall be rubbed or dipped in acid-free and alkaline-free grease (technical
Vaseline) and then immediately connected to the terminal. This step prevents a non-conductive oxidation layer to form by exposure
to oxygen.
Torque
Due to the tendency of aluminium to fl ow, the terminals shall be tightened prior to operation and again after the fi rst 200 operating
hours (recommended). In doing so, the correct torque of 25-30 Nm must be observed.
Repeated connection of aluminium conductor
If the aluminium conductor was removed from the terminal, the above steps shall be repeated.

Inspection

Due to the tendency of aluminium to fl ow, the terminals shall be re-tightened after the initial 200 operating hours
(recommended)
. In doing so, the correct torque of 25-30 Nm must be observed.
