MAINTENANCE
Regularly clean the spare wheel bracket and spare wheel with a water hose to dissolve
mud etc. Do not use any cleaning agents that contain solvent or oil, it will harm the
rubber.
Once a year have your spare wheel bracket maintained and visually inspected. This
inspection must include all the bolt/nut connections and lubrication of movable
parts/joints.
Maintenance tires
Studies have shown that increasing age of a tire, the strength slightly decreases, which
means that the chance of a blowout increases with older tires. Tires which are mounted
under a caravan can last for years, because they do not make so many kilometres as a
car. Caravan tires therefore often have sufficient profile, but show, because of age,
sidewall cracks and because of the age, the risk of a blowout increases. As rubber ages,
the VACO association (Dutch tire industry) advises after 6 years to check the tires yearly
by a tire specialist and after 10 years preventively replace them. The production date of
the tire can be read on the sidewall of the tire. The manufacturers code or the DOT code
can give you information of the age of the tire. Since the year 2000 there will be a four-
digit number on the tire; for example 4501. The number 45 stands for week 45 and the
number 01 stands for the year 2001.
