WARNING AND CAUTIONS:
•
TO BE INSTALLED AND/OR USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPROPRIATE ELECTRICAL CODES AND REGULATIONS.
•
THIS SPD IS INTENDED TO BE INSTALLED BY AN ELECTRICIAN OR UTILITY COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE.
•
TO AVOID FIRE, SHOCK, OR DEATH; REMOVE POWER TO SERVICE AREA AND SWITCH ALL CIRCUIT BREAKERS OFF TO ELIMINATE LOAD.
•
USE THIS DEVICE WITH COPPER OR COPPER CLAD WIRE ONLY.
INTRODUCTION
Transient voltage surges are short-term deviations from a desired voltage level or signal that can occur at any time. Such changes can result in an electronic device malfunction, or
cause extensive damage. Also termed "spikes", these occurrences take place as a result of magnetic field/inductive coupling or whenever the line current is interrupted. They can
originate from either inside a facility, or derive from outside utility lines. Outside transient influences involve induced lighting and utility grid switching. Sources within a facility involve
loads that are switched, such as electric motors that are turned ON and OFF and are addressed by devices applied at point-of-use equipment.
DESCRIPTION
Leviton Metersocket Surge Arrester Surge Protective Device (SPD), Cat. No. 50240-MSA is the first line of
protection designed to safeguard homes from high voltage impulses.
SPECIFICATIONS
•
This SPD is designed for ETL Listed Type 1 Device.
•
IEEE C62.41-1991 category C3 and C62.11 Metal Oxide Surge Arresters combination wave suppressor.
•
40 mm TPMOV fused SPD circuitry for both Line 1 and 2 to Ground and Line-to-Line through the ground
path.
GENERAL INFORMATION
•
Green LED ON indicates surge protection is stable.
•
Red LED ON indicates protection failed on Lines 1 or 2.
•
SPD enclosed in standard metersocket adapter.
•
Standard polycarbonate SPD is inserted with Green and Red LEDs facing down.
•
"TOP" label is located inside the open SPD cavity.
•
The service meter plugs into the outside opening of the SPD.
•
For additional SPD effectiveness, supplement with Leviton SPDs (outlets, modules, power strips, plug-
ins, etc.) to protect against internally generated transients between the service meter and the point of
transient sensitive use.
TO INSTALL
1.
RESTORE POWER, if necessary.
2.
Measure voltage to service meter between Line 1 and Neutral, and Line 2 and Neutral. System voltage
must be 120V AC +/- 10%.
3.
TURN OFF POWER.
4.
Throw main disconnect to OFF position to reduce accidental load possibilities.
NOTE: DO NOT install on service which exceeds 200A (with Murray Cat. No. RH173CRF Metersocket)
continuous current.
5.
Remove existing service meter. The SPD is located between the service meter and the meter base
enclosure (Diagram 1).
6.
Position the SPD so the Green and Red LEDs face down, the wiring connections (terminals and White
pigtail) face the service wiring, and the open cavity of the SPD faces out. The "Top" label is located inside
the open SPD cavity.
NOTE: Wiring connections (White Neutral pigtail) should be made before plugging in the SPD. The
service meter should be plugged into the outside opening of the SPD.
7.
The SPD will be installed so that the Green and Red LEDs face down. Therefore, Line 1 and Line 2 will
be connected to the top two SPD terminals.
WARNING:
EXTREME CARE MUST BE EXERCISED TO CONNECT NEUTRAL PIGTAIL TO
NEUTRAL BUS IF DONE WHILE LINE 1 AND LINE 2 ARE AT RATED VOLTAGE. POWER MUST BE
TURNED OFF BEFORE INSTALLATION!
NOTE: If using Cat. Nos. 50240-FAA or 50240-FMA, go directly to step 11.
8.
Carefully pull a Neutral (or Ground) wire through connecting conduits from the distribution panel Neutral
bus into the cavity vacated by the service meter.
9.
Connect the SPD White Neutral pigtail to the Neutral bus wire pulled into the cavity.
Keep the length of this wire as short as practical, leaving enough space to enable the removal of the SPD
without stressing the pigtail Neutral.
10. MOUNTING:
For Ringless SPD: Install the SPD LEDs facing down and secure by closing the cover and locking (Fig. 1).
For SPD with Ring: Close the cover and lock, then install the SPD LEDs facing down and secure with a
locking ring (Fig. 2).
11. Restore power. INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE.
OPERATION
1.
Return all distribution panel circuit breakers to the ON position.
2.
Verify that the Green LED on the MSA SPD is lit. If the Red LED is lit, then re-check installation. If unit
must be replaced, remove power before replacing SPD unit as required.
