PS-R-01
Outdoor Temperature Sensor
Installation and Operation Manual
The PerfectSense™ PS-R-01 Outdoor Sensor is designed to sense
temperature at remote outdoor locations and send this information to
the PerfectSense Thermostat. This sensor can be used with the PS4000
and PS5000 thermostat models. The sensor can be used as a stand alone
sensor or as part of an averaging network. Once a sensor is connected to
the thermostat, the thermostat's built-in sensor is no longer used. The
thermostat's installer set-up parameters should be modified to tell the
thermostat that a remote outdoor temperature sensor is being used. The
temperature reading on the thermostat's display will be the temperature at
the remote sensor location.
Please take time to read and understand these instructions as proper
installation of the PS-R-01 will ensure an accurate and reliable
temperature sensor.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
WARNING: ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD – Turn off power
at the main power source by unscrewing fuse
or switching circuit breaker to the OFF position
before installing, removing, or cleaning this
thermostat/sensor.
WARNING: FIRE AND ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD – This
device should be installed by a qualified
service technician with due regard for safety
as improper installation could result in a fire
and electric shock hazard.
WARNING: FIRE AND ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD – This is
a 24V AC low-voltage thermostat. Do not install
on voltages higher than 30V AC.
• Do not switch system to cool if the temperature is below 50°F (10°C).
This can damage your cooling system and may cause personal injury.
• Do not short (jumper) across terminals on the gas valve or at the system
control to test installation. This will damage the thermostat and void
the warranty.
• All wiring must conform to local and national building and electrical
codes and ordinances.
• Use this thermostat and sensor only as described in the manual.
OVERVIEW
The PS-R-01 temperature sensor includes the sensor with lead wires
attached. Use an appropriate mounting clip to attach the sensor to the
surface. The PS-R-01 temperature sensor is connected to a thermostat as
an external sensor. The thermostat must be configured appropriately.
When installing this product:
1. Read these instructions carefully. Failure to follow them could damage
the product or cause a hazardous condition.
2. Check the ratings given in the instructions and on the product to make
sure the product is suitable for your application.
3. Installer must be a trained, experienced service technician.
4. After installation is complete, check out the product operation as
provided in these instructions.
WARNING: ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD – Can cause electrical
shock or equipment damage. Disconnect power
supply before connecting wiring.
SET-UP
Mount the sensor where there is good air circulation so it can measure
true outdoor ambient temperature. Be sure the mounting surface is flat
and the wire distance between the PS-R-01 and the thermostat is less
than 200 feet, Figure 1.

for outdoor sensor
Do NOT mount the sensor in direct sunlight or where hot or cold air blows
on the sensor. Discharge from an outdoor compressor unit, vent or fan
causes inaccurate temperature readings. Do not mount where snow, ice
or debris can cover it.
Mark the area on the location selected for attaching the sensor mounting
clip. Use an appropriate mounting clip, Figure 2, and mount the clip.
WIRING
ATTENTION : ELECTRICAL INTERFERENCE (NOISE) HAZARD
Can cause erratic temperature readings and
system operation.
Keep wiring at least one foot away from large inductive loads such as;
motors, line starters, lighting ballasts and large power distribution panels.
Use shielded cable to reduce interference when rerouting is not possible.
Make certain the wiring connections are secure.
WARNING: ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD – Can cause electrical
shock or equipment damage. Disconnect power
supply before connecting wiring.
Wiring must comply with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
Wire the PS-R-01 outdoor sensor to S1 and S2 terminals on the
thermostat. If the lead wire provided is not long enough (9.48 ft [3 m]),
run a color-coded, 18 gauge 2-wire to the mounting location, refer to
Figure 3. Pigtail wiring may be used.
Mount the PS-R-01 in its mounting clip. Plug the wiring hole using non-
hardening caulk or putty.

CHECKOUT
The PS-R-01 outdoor temperature sensor converts outdoor ambient
temperature to a resistance that the thermostat can interpret.
The PS-R-01 has a negative temperature coefficient (NTC), which means
that resistance decreases as the temperature increases. Refer to Tables 1
and 2, Sensor resistance at room temperature.
With an accurate thermometer [+/- 1°F (0.5°C)] measure the temperature
at the sensor location, allowing time for the thermometer to stabilize
before reading.
To verify sensor resistance, remove one wire from the PS-R-01 remote
sensor. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance across the sensor.
Then verify the sensor accuracy with the temperature/resistance in
Table 1. Any difference in the temperature readings may be offset using
the thermostat's settings.
CALIBRATION
The PS-R-01 outdoor sensor is calibrated at the factory and cannot be
recalibrated in the field.

PS-R-01
