OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Wood and Construction Moisture
Meter BT-300
Item-No. 10 12 88
Intended Use
The device is intended for the comparative measurement of the moisture level in wood and mineral building
materials. This enables the moisture level to be checked over a certain period so as to make comparisons.
The measurement is made wit two insertion sensors; these are held on or inserted into the material to be
measured. In addition to the moisture level, the battery powered device also has an option to show the ambi-
ent temperature in the display. The device has a battery change indicator. For protection during transport, a
protection cap is enclosed.
Observe all other safety instructions in this manual, as improper handling may lead to injuries. The protective
cap must always be snapped on when the device is not in use.
Safety Instructions and Hazard Warnings
An exclamation mark in a triangle indicates important instructions in the operating
instructions. Please read all the instructions before using this device, they include
important information on its correct operation.
• The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe these safety instructions! We
do not assume any liability for any consequential damage!
• We do not accept any liability for personal injury or damage to property caused by incorrect handling or fail-
ure to observe the safety instructions. Any warranty will be void in such cases.
• The unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the device is not allowed because of safety reasons.
• Extra care should be taken when using the device for the first time. Please follow these operating instruc-
tions when so doing.
• The device must not be exposed to extreme temperatures, strong vibrations or high levels of humidity. The
correct operation of the display is only ensured in the temperature range 0°C to +40?.
• The housing may not be disassembled, except to open the battery compartment.
• Measuring devices are not toys and should be kept out of the reach of children.

Inserting/Replacing the Batteries
For operation, 4 LR 44 button cell batteries or identical types are needed. One set of batteries is enclosed.
To insert/replace the battery, proceed as follows:
• Pull the battery compartment cover (5) down from the device.
• Insert the batteries in the battery compartment observing the correct polarity. Pay attention to the polarity
indication in the battery compartment.
• Close the battery compartment again, carefully.
You need to replace the battery when the battery
To prevent damage to the device from leaking batteries, remove the batteries, if you do not need to use it for
a longer period of time. For the same reason, it is advisable to remove flat batteries immediately.
Do not leave batteries lying around carelessly. They might be swallowed by children or
pets. If swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.
Batteries must not be charged, shorted or thrown into a fire. There is danger of explo-
sion.
Start-up and Operation
To ensure the correct set-up and operation, please read the operating instructions and
safety instructions carefully before using the device. The measuring device is not suit-
able for quantitative measurements e.g. of quality assurance.
Using two insertion sensors, the device measures the conductivity of the material to be checked. The con-
ductivity increases with the material's moisture level.
Wooden materials, such as cut wood, carton or paper, have a different moisture content than mineral materi-
als, such mortar, bricks, stone, etc. This is why there are two ranges available for the measurement. Both
ranges are indicated by symbols:
Version 06/09
°
iconappears on the display (top right).
Mineral measuring value, for building material
Organic measuring value for wood
Operation and range switching is controlled by a button.
Switching on and selecting the measurement function
Press the „ON/SET" button (4) to start. The display shows the measuring function that was set last.
To change the measuring function press the ON/SET" button approx. 3 seconds after switching on. The sym-
bol for the measuring function last used starts flashing. To change the measuring function, press button (4)
within 3 seconds. Every time the button is pressed, it changes to the next measuring function.
The following measuring functions can be selected:
Wood moisture, material moisture, ambient temperature in °C, ambient temperature in °F etc.
When selecting the desired measuring function, please wait for about 3 seconds, until the setting mode has
finished. The selected measuring function is now active.
Measuring wood
• Select the function „measuring wood" and remove the protective cap from the device.
• Insert the insertion sensors as far as possible into the material. Make sure to measure diagonally to the
wood grain, so as not to obtain a false value.
• The measured value is shown on the display
• After measuring, replace the protective cap on the device.
Tip: Firewood should have a residual moisture value of < 20 vol%, before it is used.
Measuring construction moisture
• Select the function „Building material" and remove the protective cap from the device.
• Place the insertion sensors on the material, exerting slight pressure. Where necessary use nails, insert them
into the material and make the measurement via the nails.
• The measured value is shown on the display
• After measuring, replace the protective cap on the device.
Temperature measurement
• Select the function „°C or °F" and remove the protective cap from the device.
• The measured value is shown on the display
• After measuring, replace the protective cap on the device.
To switch off
The meter turns off automatically after about 15 seconds. When set for the measuring functions wood and con-
struction moisture, the meter will only switch off automatically if no measurement has been made for15 sec-
onds.
Display Light
To switch on the display light, press the button (4) during the measurement. The display light switches on for
about 3 seconds and then switches off again automatically.
Maintenance and Cleaning
The insertion sensors are expendable parts and are not included in the guarantee. Replacement is not pos-
sible.
The outside of the device should only be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth or a brush. Never use aggressive
cleaning agents or chemical solutions since these might damage the surface of the casing or impair the oper-
ation.
Disposal
Electronic products are raw material and do not belong in the household waste. When the device
has reached the end of its service life, please dispose of it, according to the current statutory
requirements, at your local collecting site. Disposal in the domestic waste is not permitted!
Disposal of flat batteries/rechargeable batteries!
As a consumer you are required (Battery Ordinance) to responsibly dispose of all used batteries and
rechargeable batteries; it is forbidden to throw them away with the normal household waste!
Contaminated batteries/rechargeable batteries are labelled with these symbols to indicate that dis-
posal in domestic waste is forbidden. The symbols for the relevant heavy metals are: Cd =
Cadmium, Hg = Mercury, Pb = Lead. You can dispose of your used batteries free of charge at your
community's collection point or any place where batteries are sold!
You thus fulfil the legal requirements and make your contribution to protecting the environment!
