1.
Extend the telescopic antenna and turn on the receiver.
2.
Set the gain as low as possible, but with an audible signal.
3.
Rotate the receiver in a circular motion around yourself. Track only using
the audible signals. To improve reception, extend the arm holding the
receiver directly above your head.
4.
The transmitter is found in the direction where the audible signal is the
loudest. If the receiver shows too wide a sector, then the gain should be
reduced using the gain control in order to better determine the transmitter's
actual direction.
5.
Listen to the signal to determine if the dog is still or in motion. The Bark
indicator or Tree switch (optional) emits signals telling if the dog is barking
or has treed its quarry.
6.
Determine the distance to the dog by reading the gradation on the gain
control.
13. Judging distance.
It can often be of value to determine the distance to the dog. This requires some expe-
rience to correctly judge the distance. The distance is indicated by transmitter signal
strength. The problem is that all radio equipment is affected by terrain. The hillier the
terrain then the shorter the distance the transmitter signal can be heard. Therefore for
judging distance it is of vital importance to be aware of the layout of the terrain where
you are tracking. For example, knowing where hills, valleys, open areas and tightly
forested spots are found.
Example: Tracking is done in two separate situations but with the exact same distance
to the dog.
In situation 1 the terrain is relatively flat ground and open fields. To make
contact with the transmitter requires that the gain dial be turned to
approximately 5 on the gradation.
In situation 2 the terrain is extremely hilly and covered with dense forest,
and there is also snow hanging on the trees. To make contact with the
transmitter in this situation requires that the gain dial is turned to around
9-10 on the gradation.
One way to improve the ability to judge the distance to a dog is to hang the transmitter
along a road and then with the help of a car measure the actual distance to the trans-
mitter. By trial and error you can then determine where to set the gain to make contact
with the transmitter at varying distances.
Another reliable method for determining the position of the dog is by 'cross-tracking'.
In principle this requires taking several directions to the dog from different spots in the
terrain and then drawing these in on a map of the area. The spot, where all these direc-
tional lines cross on the map shows the location of the dog. This method requires
