Cutting Without Fences and/or Guard
Using the router without
WARNING
the safety shield and
fences in place can lead to serious
personal injury. Use extreme caution:
Operate the router without safety
shields and fences ONLY when
absolutely necessary, and with ball-
bearing-guided-type router bits.
Feed workpiece against
WARNING
the router bit's direction of
rotation. Unplug router prior to
changing the bit, modifying settings, or
making any other adjustments.
Some jobs require that you rotate the
safety shield out of the way and remove
the fences. See Figure 23.

If the piece of wood you are routing is
between you and the router bit, feed
from RIGHT to LEFT. Remember to
always feed the workpiece against
router bit's direction of rotation. See
Figure 24.

If the router bit is between you and the
piece of wood being routed, then feed
from LEFT to RIGHT. Always feed
against the rotation of the router bit. See
Figure 25.
Scrap pieces will provide extra stability
and support when routing a small
workpiece or ends of large workpieces.
