Matco Tools MST11880A Mode D'emploi

Before working on the vehicle's steering system, refer to the manufacturer's instruction manual. These
instructions cover the use of the Matco MST11880A Pitman Arm Remover F-Series Tool and are not
intended as a guide to perform the repairs or service to the steering gear.
1. After removing the nut and washer from the vehicle's steering box, slide the opening of the Remover
Base (1) into the gap between the top of the pitman arm and the bottom of the steering box housing.
Be sure the dust cover ring on the sector shaft is pushed up and out of the way to provide clearance
for the Remover Base.
2. Position the Dog Bone (3) over the end of the Remover Base (1) that has the shortest length from the
centerline of the sector shaft. (Fig. 1)
3. Place the reciprocating end of the Remover Lever Arm (2) over the Dog Bone (3) making sure the
dimple on the underside of the Remover Lever Arm (2) is positioned in line with and below the sector
shaft. (Fig. 1, Arrow)
4. While holding the Custom Bolt (4) in one hand, place the Rocking Washer (5) over the threads with
flat surface facing up, followed by the Bronze Washer and Custom Nut (6). Loosely thread these items
together at first.
5. Position the radius head of the Custom Bolt (4) over the end of the Remover Base (1) with threads
pointing down. Then, place the Rocking Washer (5) under the end of the Remover Lever Arm (2) with
Washer and Custom Nut (6) threaded in place. (Fig. 2)
6. The combined weight of the pitman arm and the MST11880A tool are very heavy. Prior to tightening
the Custom Hardware (4, 5, 6) be sure to secure the safety strap around the steering box and
MST11880A puller assembly to help support the weight of these items as they are released. (Fig. 2)
7. Begin tightening the Custom Nut (6) until the pitman arm is separated from the tapered and splined
sector shaft on the steering box. You will hear a "pop" when the pitman arm releases.
Safety Warning:
Operator and bystanders should always wear eye protection and gloves while using the
MST11880A and working on the vehicle's steering gear. The safety strap should always be
attached when using the MST11880A.
Maintenance:
After each use, clean any grease and grime from the MST11880A components, and always
lubricate with chassis grease before each use. Keeping the threads lubricated will extend the
longevity of the Custom Bolt and Nut and ensure smooth operation of the tool.
