CAUTION: THIS FAN AUTOMATICALLY STARTS
WHENEVER THE SOLAR PANEL IS EXPOSED TO A
LIGHT SOURCE, OR IS ACTIVATED BY AUTOMATIC
THERMOSTAT FROM HOUSE POWER. ALWAYS
EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN IN THE VICINITY
OF THE FAN.
NOTE: Always ensure there is proper attic intake
ventilation at or near the soffit area of the roof. This is
required for a balanced ventilation system and to help
avoid premature ventilator motor failure. Use the chart
located on the outside of the package or visit gaf.com/
ventcalculator to ensure the minimum recommended
intake ventilation is installed on the home. Always consult
local building codes for ventilation requirements.
1. Determine Location Place vent as close to the peak
of the roof as possible but below the ridge line. Be
sure the unit faces to the south for optimal power.
Make sure the location is not shaded by trees or other
nearby structures during the day (Figure 1a). Measure
from the peak of the roof to the midpoint of the vent
(Figure 1b). Transfer this measurement into the
attic and mark the location inside the attic, centered
between two rafters, and drill a hole (Figure 1c). Put
an object, such as a pencil or nail, through the hole
to mark it on the outside. Note: Single units should
be centered. If multiple units are used, space them
evenly over the length of the ridge. CAUTION: Be sure
to mount the vent unit on the outside of the roof deck
(motor down) above unoccupied attic space.
2. Mark Opening Cut out the 15" (381 mm) template
printed on the outside of the package. Place center
of template over hole marked in roof in Step 1. Use
correctly positioned template to mark a circle. For
rafters 24" (610 mm) on center, mark the cut–out
as shown (Figure 2a). For rafters 16" (406 mm) on
center, proceed with marking as shown (Figure 2b).
3. Cut Out Opening And Test Position Roll back and
separate all shingles 7" (178 mm) from the top and
sides of the cut-out area. Be sure that all roofing nails
have been removed. Using a saber saw, jig saw, or
hand saw, cut and remove all roof shingles and deck
inside the 15" (381mm) diameter circle (Figure 3a).
Do NOT cut any rafters. Test the final position by
inserting the top half of the unit flashing under the
rolled shingles. Trim shingles as necessary (Figure 3b).

Note: For additional weather protection, install a 18" x
18" (457 x 457 mm) piece of GAF Leak Barrier around
the opening. Remove release film & center the Leak
Barrier over hole. Press into place and cut out the Leak
Barrier covering the opening.
4. Secure And Seal Unit Remove the unit from the test
position and liberally apply ASTM C920 Urethane
Sealant around the perimeter of the underside of the
unit's flashing. Align the unit and slide it under the
shingle corners. Be sure that the arrow marked on
the flashing points up to the roof peak. Using the 4"
(102 mm) increment fastener guides on the flashing,
secure the unit into place with galvanized roofing nails
at all four corners and every 4" (102 mm) along the
sides and top of the unit flashing (Figure 4).
Note: Do NOT use petroleum-based sealants (such as
roofing cement) in contact with the vent, as they can
cause degradation of the polypropylene. Finish by sealing
down any raised shingles and exposed nail heads on
the vent flashing, using the previously recommended
urethane sealant.
Note: For high-wind areas or as required by building code
approval, use the 4" (102 mm) increment fastener guides
to secure the vent with roofing nails at all four corners
and every 4" (102 mm) along the sides, top, and bottom
of the flashing.
5. Thermostat/Humidistat Controller (Solar-Powered
model) Installation. Remove the included controller
from the inner carton. Fasten it to the edge of stud
or rafter adjacent to the vent with wood screws
(not included) through pre-punched mounting tabs
on the controller. Adjust the thermostat as desired
from 60°F (16°C) to 120°F (49°C) (105°F [41°C]
recommended/ factory setting). Adjust the humidistat
as desired (recommended/factory setting is 70%).

PRSOLAR2 & PRHYBRID2
FOR DUAL-POWERED MODEL ONLY
1. Mount Dual-Powered Control Module Remove
the Dual-Powered Control Module from the inner
carton. Fasten it to the edge of stud or rafter adjacent
to the fan (motor leads are 24" (610 mm) in
length) with wood screws (not included) through
pre-punched mounting tabs on side of Dual-Powered
Control Module.
2. Wiring Begin by removing the Dual-Powered Control
Module cover by gently prying cover off of retention
tabs on sides. Caution: Control board has sensitive
electronic components.
A. Install Romex
Type Connector (not included) in 1/2"
®
(12.7 mm) knockout and insert house power cable.
B. Connect house power wires as shown (Figure 5a).
C. Adjust thermostat as desired from 60°F (16°C)
to 120°F (49°C) (105°F [41°C] recommended/
factory setting).
D. Connect the male solar plug to the female plug on
control module, and connect the male plug on the
control module to the female motor plug.
E. Each Dual-Powered unit must have its own control
module (Figure 5b).
