OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Please read the following instructions before using your new Andis nail grinder. Give it the
care that a fine precision built instrument deserves and it will give you years of service.
POWER SUPPLY
Your nail grinder comes with a power adapter.
Plug cord from nail grinder into adapter (see
Figure A), then plug power supply into electrical
outlet. Operate at 120 volt, 60 cycle AC electrical
current or as noted on unit.
ASSEMBLING NAIL GRINDER
Your Andis nail grinder comes with two sizes
of sanding drums and sanding bands:
1/4" and 1/2".
Figure A
To remove a sanding drum: depress collet release
button while turning collet nut counter-clockwise
using wrench provided until loose (see Figure B). Remove sanding drum.
To insert a new sanding drum: insert the sanding drum into the collet. Depress collet
release button while turning collet nut clockwise until it locks into place.
Using wrench provided, turn collet nut clockwise until sanding drum is tight (see Figure C).
To replace a sanding band, loosen the screw (using the small screwdriver tip on the wrench
provided) to contract the drum and slide the old band off. Slide the new sanding band on,
and expand the drum by tightening the screw again.
IMPORTANT: Before each use, check that the drum is sufficiently expanded to secure the
band during use. If band is loose during operation, it may be thrown from grinder and
cause injury.

BEFORE GRINDING
Before grinding an animal's nails:
1. Get the animal used to having his paws touched and handled before showing him the nail
grinder. Take a few minutes to manipulate his paws while giving him positive reinforcement.
2. Let him sniff the nail grinder while it is turned off.
3. Turn the grinder on so he can get used to the sound it makes. Have him sit while the tool
is in your hand and running.
4. Once the animal is used to the tool, try touching it to his nails. Do not do any actual
grinding yet.
5. You may need to repeat the above steps a few times.
NAIL ANATOMY
Before grinding the animal's nails you need to be
able to identify "quick" of the nail. A dog's nail is
made up of a hard outer cover, which protects
the quick, which is the inner soft part containing
blood vessels and nerve endings. Should you cut
the quick while grinding, the animal will feel pain
and the nail will start to bleed.
In dogs with light colored nails, the quick can
usually be seen as pinkish in color, which makes
45°
it easier to avoid. If the dog has both light and
dark colored nails, you may estimate the length
of the quick in dark nails based on the light colored nails. Keep checking the animal's nail
and watch for a dark spot in the middle of the grinding area. This indicates the start of the
quick; do not grind into this. The diagram shows the ideal angle in which to trim or grind an
animal's nails and the approximate location of the quick.
ANIMAL SAFETY AND AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF
Animal should be secured during grinding process. It might be helpful to have another
person help to restrain the animal if necessary.
Keep hair away from spinning parts. If hair gets entangled in the tool, or excess pressure
is applied to sanding drum, unit will stop automatically. If unit stops automatically, it will
reset itself and restart after a few seconds, if pressure or hair is cleared.
GRINDING NAILS
Your Andis nail grinder comes with LO and HIGH speed operation. Use the LO setting
(Setting #1) for most nail grinding needs. Use the HIGH speed setting (Setting #2) for large
animals or nail buffing applications. To start nail grinder, move switch button up to the #1 or
#2 position. To stop, press switch back down to the original (#0) position. After using your
Andis nail grinder, rewrap cord and place in storage case provided.
1. Turn grinder on and select either LO (7,000 RPM) or HIGH (12,000 RPM) speed operation.
2. Separate the animal's toes by placing your thumb between the pads and hold foot
securely. Push long hair away from the foot to avoid tangling or pulling. You can try
placing a nylon stocking over the foot and pushing nails through the nylon to allow easy
access to nails while keeping hair out of the way.
3. Support the toe and nail in one hand while
using the grinder in the other hand. This
keeps vibrations to a minimum and is more
comfortable for the animal.
4. To get a smooth edge, grind from the bottom
of the nail up towards the tip.
5. Use a continuous side-to-side motion when
grinding each nail; holding the tip in one place
too long can cause unevenness and over-
grinding. Do not keep the sanding drum
against the nail for longer than three seconds
at a time.
6. IMPORTANT: Do not apply excessive force
when grinding. Let the speed of the grinder do the work. Do not apply pressure to the
nail with the spinning sanding drum. Pressure causes the nail to get hot and will cause
pain to the animal.
7. Keep the nail grinder away from the nail when first starting, or the grinder may "grab" the
nail and cause loss of control or injury to the animal.
8. Use the finishing stone for final shaping and a smooth finish.

The internal mechanism of your nail grinder has been permanently lubricated at the factory.
