Calibration procedure
Before using the Prime Aquatic refractometer to measure
the salinity of your aquarium, the device must be
calibrated with reverse osmosis water. Please respect a
temperature of 20 ° C during this step.
Step 1 :
Open the light plate, and place 2-3 drops of RO water on
the main prism.
Close the plate, water should cover the entire surface of
the prism evenly without air bubbles.
Let the device sit for about 30 seconds so that the water
is perfectly equilibrated at the temperature of the prism
before proceeding to step 2.
Step 2 :
Point the light plate at a light source if you are in a bright
room.
In a dark room, press the button on the plate to turn on
the device's LED light.
Place the eye in the eyepiece, a circular field appears with
graduations in the center. Focus your sight by turning the
adjustment dial.
The upper part of the field of view should be blue while
the upper part should be white.
Step 3:
Look through the eyepiece and turn the calibration screw
until the dividing line between the blue and white color
fits perfectly with the zero as in the image above.
The refractometer is equipped with an ATC temperature
compensation system. The calibration having been made
at 20 ° C, the next measurements carried out will have a
correct and precise result in a temperature range from 10
° C to 30 ° C.
The calibration is thus complete.
Measure
Once the calibration is complete, the measurements can
be taken.
Pour 2 to 3 drops of water to be tested on the prism.
Close the light plate.
Place the eye in the eyepiece and proceed to reading the
values.
The transition line between the blue area at the top and
the white area at the bottom gives the value obtained.
The value for the salt content of water can be read in ppt.
The salinity in a reef aquarium should be around 34 PPT
(34 grams of salt per liter of water).
Maintenance and warning
Before any first measurement, carefully follow the
calibration procedure.
Do not expose the device to extreme environments and
do not immerse it in water.
Do not measure chemical or corrosive liquids with this
instrument, it may damage the surface of the prism.
Clean the instrument between each measurement by
moistening the soft cloth supplied with the instrument.
Any other cloth could eventually scratch the prism.
The Prime Aquatic refractometer is an optical instrument,
it should be handled and stored with care.
