Tips and Notes
• Instead of using the supplied wall plug transformers, the POF / network converters
may be supplied with power via the USB port on a computer or a USB hub with its
own power supply unit.
Alternatively, a USB port on a TV, game console, etc. can be used.
The USB port must be able to supply a current of 500 mA.
• If another POF cable is used, make sure this has the following features:
- Outer diameter: 2.2 mm per lead
- Material type: PMMA SI fibre
- Manufactured according to IEC 60794-2-41
Troubleshooting
No network connection
• Check the LEDs on the RJ45 sockets. With an active network connection, one LED
should light up continuously (LINK status), the other LED must flash during data
transfer.
• Check the power supply to the POF / network converters.
If you use, e.g. a USB port on TV, computer, etc. for power supply, then make sure
that both POF / network converters are separately supplied with power.
The USB port to which the POF / network converters are connected must be able to
supply a current of 500 mA.
Use the two wall plug transformers included on a trial basis to supply power.
• The POF home network starter kit works like a conventional RJ45 patch cable, in
principle. No drivers, etc. are required!
• Is there a bend in the POF cable? This prevents light transmission, and hence the
network connection.
Perhaps the POF cable can be "straightened". Depending on the intensity of the
bend, the cable must be shortened accordingly to remove the bend.
• Check whether the leads of the POF cable are properly seated in the snap locks.
• Due to the optical properties of POF fibres, large cable lengths as in "real" fibre-
optic cables are not possible. For optimum cutting edges, up to 50 m is possible.
• Make sure that both the POF / network converters are connected via the two leads
in a crossed manner. The "R" port on the first POF / network converter must be
connected with the "T" port on a second converter and vice versa.
Slow or unstable data transfer
• Many bends (especially small radii) shorten the possible cable length and/or reduce
the speed of data transmission.
• Check whether the leads of the POF cable are properly seated in the snap locks. An
air gap between the cutting edges of the optical fibres, and the transceiver unit in
the POF / network converters leads to frequent errors, so that data packets need to
be retransmitted.
If necessary, cut once again both ends of the used POF cable using the POF cutter
included. To do this, use a brand new knife edge of the POF cutter.
• Due to the optical properties of POF fibres, large cable lengths as in "real" fibre-
optic cables are not possible. For optimum cutting edges, up to 50 m is possible.
• In the network card settings (for example, in the Windows Device Manager, open
the properties window of the network interface, and possibly open the advanced
properties), the so-called flow control must be enabled. Then restart Windows.
Check light transmission
• Put the POF / network converter in operation via the wall plug transformers. Release
the snap lock of one of the two POF / network converters and pull out both leads of
the POF cable.
One of the two leads should light up red. This lead must be connected to the "R"
port on the other POF / network converter. The second lead that is not lit up must be
connected to the "T" port.
It is important that the ports "R" and "T" on the two POF / network converters are
connected in a crossed manner, see "Connection" section.
Disposal
Dispose of an unserviceable product in accordance with the relevant statu-
tory regulations.
Handling
• The POF network converters and the wall plug transformers are solely in-
tended to be used in dry indoor locations; these devices may not get damp
or wet! With the wall plug transformers there is also the deadly peril of an
electric shock!
• Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold
room to a warm one. The condensation that forms might damage the pro-
duct under certain circumstances. With the wall plug transformers there
is also the deadly peril of an electric shock!
Allow the product to reach room temperature before connecting it to the
power supply and putting it to use. This may take several hours.
• Any maintenance or repair work may only be performed by an authorised
repair shop.
• Check the product for damage before each use!
If you detect any damage, DO NOT connect the product to the mains sup-
ply!
Safe operation can no longer be assumed if:
- the product shows visible signs of damage
- the product does not function or does not function properly (e.g. a bur-
ning smell)
- the product was stored under unfavourable conditions
- it was exposed to heavy loads during transport
• When connecting and operating the device, make sure the cables are not
bent or jammed.
• Avoid the following adverse conditions at the installation location and du-
ring transport:
- Excessive humidity or dampness
- Extreme cold or heat
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations
• If the product is not to be used for some time (e.g. during storage), unplug
both wall plug transformers from the mains sockets.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Maintenance or repair may be performed only by qualified personnel or a specialised
repair shop. The product contains no parts that require servicing. Therefore, do not
open/dismantle it.
Use a clean, dry, soft cloth for cleaning.
Dust can easily be removed using a clean, long-haired brush and a vacuum cleaner.
Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, cleaning alcohol or other chemical
solutions, since these could damage the surfaces or even impair operation.
