E678 DRAFT REGULATORS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

THE INSTALLATION OF THE EQUIPMENT SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REGULATION OF AUTHORITIES HAVING JURISDICTION
AND CSA STANDARD B139 (CANADA) OR NFPA 31 (USA)
The regulator contained in this package is manufactured with precision. It is designed to regulate
chimney draft and fuel efficiency with accuracy.
STEP 1: Locate the draft regulator
Locate the draft control as near to the furnace or boiler as possible. If a stack control is installed on the
flue pipe, install regulator downstream of stack control and allow enough clearance to respect the stack
control instructions. See Figures 1 through 6 for best locations for oils or solid fuels.
STEP 2: Install draft regulator collar on flue pipe
Hold the collar firmly against flue pipe and insert 2 self tapping screws (# 8 X 1/2") to fix the collar in place. Bend
the slits against the interior wall of the collar.
STEP 3: Assemble weight assembly on draft control vane
Insert the carriage bolt on the slide. Insert weight on carriage bolt. Lock assembly by tightening the weight.
STEP 4: Install draft regulator on collar
For correct operation, the damper must be mounted with the vane hinges horizontal and with the face of the
damper plumb. This is done by rotating the damper section within the collar for any pipe position. Once the draft
regulator has been properly positioned, tighten screw on the collar to hold firmly in place.
STEP 5: Balance the weight assembly to adjust the draft
Proper operation of the regulator depends upon proper installation and adjustment. Use a CO
thermometer and draft gauge to adjust draft.
To increase the draft, move the weight away from the vane. To decrease the draft, move the weight towards the
vane. When the desired draft has been achieved, lock the weight assembly in place by tightening the weight
against the slide.
(Note: For the regulator to operate properly, the chimney must be clean and free of obstructions.)
FOR WOOD AND COAL FIRED APPLICATIONS
Installation of this draft control should be made in accordance with the stove manufacturer's instructions. When this is not possible, follow the
directions below.
The best setting for wood and coal burners is a draft gauge reading of .04" to .08" W.C. If a draft gauge is not available, with the draft regulator
fully installed and a good fire burning, adjust the weight closer to the vane for as low as a draft setting as possible, without the fire dying or
getting smoke-back with the stove door slightly opened. To obtain higher heat levels, move the weight away from the vane to increase the
setting.
For best combustion efficiency, stack temperature (upstream of the draft regulator) should be 350 ° F t o 450 ° F for dry wood. Recommended
stack temperatures and draft settings for coal vary according to the manufacturer of the stove.
FOR OIL-FIRED APPLICATIONS
Installation of this draft control should be made in accordance with the furnace or stove manufacturer's instructions. When this is not possible,
follow the directions below.
Use a CO2 indicator, stack thermometer and draft gauge to adjust draft for oil fired burners. In most cases, domestic oil burners work best with
the draft of .01" to .02" W.C.

Align holes by folding lugs located on the end of the collar. Insert a #6-32
screw through holes of both lugs. Insert a #6-32 hexagonal nut on the
screw but do not tighten.
Slip collar over the flange of the assembled draft regulator.
Place other end of collar over flue pipe in desired position. Make sure that
the collar is horizontally levelled (face plumb). Draw an outline of the collar
on the flue pipe. Draw a second line 1/2" inside the first outline. Cut a hole
in the flue pipe by following the interior line. Cut radial slits every 1/2" within
the outline on the flue pipe. The slits should start at the edge of the hole cut
in the flue pipe and end 1/8" from the first outline drawn on the flue pipe.
