Installing a hard disk drive
• Make sure that the product is turned off.
Switch "O" : Off
• Connect a SATA hard disk drive with the appropriate terminal block. Do not use any force.
A 6.4 cm (2.5") hard disk drive fits through the slot in the bay door.
To install a 8.9 cm (3.5") hard disk drive, you must push down the bay door.
Operation
• Turn on the computer. Wait until the operating system is completely booted up.
• Turn the product on.
The control LED PWR lights up to indicate that the product is receiving power.
The control LED Active lights up to indicate that the hard disk drive is ready for use.
The control LED Active flashes during read and write access.
A new hard disk drive has to be partitioned and formatted first before the drive is
displayed in Explorer and can be used; see the next section.
Partitioning/formatting the hard disk drive
• In Windows
, you can partition and format the hard disk drive via Control Panel.
®
• First, make a new partition.
• Then format the newly created partition. A quick format is sufficient. Depending on the
capacity of the hard disk drive, a regular format may take a long time to complete.
Consult a technician if you are unsure how to partition/format the hard disk drive.
Removing a hard disk drive
• Stop all access to the hard disk drive. Close all opened files.
• Safely remove the hard disk drive with the operating system.
• Turn the product off.
• Wait at least 30 seconds until the hard disk drive stops.
• Hold the side of the hard disk drive casing and gently pull it up and out. Do not use force
when removing it.
Tips and notes
a) USB 3.0
• USB 3.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the product with an installed
hard disk drive also works with traditional USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 ports. However, the transfer
speed will be reduced accordingly.
• If your computer has a USB 3.0 controller, transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbit/s are possible
depending on the hard disk drives installed in your computer and in the product.
• If you are connecting the product to a USB hub, the USB hub must support the USB 3.0
standard in order to provide the maximum transfer speed.
• If you use a conventional USB 2.0 /1.1 cable instead of the included USB 3.0 cable, the
transmission speed will be reduced accordingly.
b) General
• Please note that certain operating systems do not support external hard disk drives with
a capacity >2 TB. Contact the customer service of your operating system vendor for more
information.
• Note that files may be damaged and the operating system may crash if the connection cable
is disconnected when data is being transferred. Always unmount the hard disk drive via the
operating system before disconnecting the connection cable.
• Always handle hard disk drives carefully. Vibrations during use and even a few seconds after
the hard disk drive has turned off may make the read/write heads touch the magnetic disk,
which can destroy the hard disk drive.
• When connecting the hard disk drive for the first time, it may take approximately one minute
for the hard disk drive to be recognised. This time may vary depending on the operating
system.
Care and cleaning
• Before cleaning, unplug the product from the operating system. Wait at least 30 seconds
• Never immerse the product in water or other liquids.
• Never use aggressive detergents, rubbing alcohol or other chemical solutions, as these may
Switch "—": On
• Use a dry, lint-free cloth to clean the product.
