Operating Instructions
Long Range RFID Reader
Item No. 1839714
Intended use
The Long Range RFID Reader operating on 125kHz is designed to read the ID information from RFID tags
and transmit this data to a connected access control system.
The unit is equipped with two data interfaces:
• Wiegand 42-Bit interface
• RS-485 serial interface operating with 9600bps / 8N1
Contact with moisture must be avoided under all circumstances.
For safety and approval purposes, you must not rebuild and/or modify this product. If you use the product
for purposes other than those described above, the product may be damaged. In addition, improper use
can result in short circuits, fires, electric shocks or other hazards. Read the instructions carefully and store

Explanation of symbols
The symbol with the lightning in the triangle is used if there is a risk to your health, e.g. due to an
electric shock.
The symbol with the exclamation mark in the triangle is used to indicate important information in
these operating instructions. Always read this information carefully.
Safety instructions
Read the operating instructions carefully and especially observe the safety information.
If you do not follow the safety instructions and information on proper handling in this
manual, we assume no liability for any resulting personal injury or damage to property.
Such cases will invalidate the warranty/guarantee.
• The handling of products operating with electric current requires you to follow the rules from
VDE such as VDE 0100, VDE0550/0551, VDE 0700, VDE 0711 and VDE 0860 or other local
rules in your country.
• These modules are not designed and authorized for use in life support or life saving
applications! Do not use the product for applications in which a temporary or permanent failure
or malfunction could cause damage to persons or property.
• If the module is used to switch currents greater 24V it is necessary to have the installation
done with no voltage applied and performed by a trained professional authorized for such
work. The module may only be used in such application if it was installed in a safe to touch
enclosure.
• The module must only be used in dry and clean environment. The use near water, heavy dirt
and/or high humidity is dangerous and not permitted.
• The product must not be used in conjunction with any type of flammable liquid or gas or other
environment with risk of spark triggered explosions.
• Never exceed the limits or ratings listed in the 'Technical Data' section at the end of this user
guide.
• If the module is used in schools or educational facilities or similar institutions the operation
must be supervised by trained and authorized staff.
• The product itself and all parts thereof (including packing material) are not suitable toys for
children! (choking hazard, risk of electric shock, ...)
Operation
a) Connection wire assignment
The 6-wire interface cable uses this color coding for the signals:
red
power supply +12-15V DC
black
power supply 0V (Data - GND)
green
Wiegand42 Interface 'WG0'
white
Wiegand42 Interface 'WG1'
blue
RS-485 Interface 'A'
yellow
RS-485 Interface 'B'
b) Power supply requirements
The power supply voltage needs to be stabilized and there must be no
high frequency noise (ripple voltage) since this could significantly reduce
the obtained reading range.
c) Data format on the Wiegand 42 interface
On the Wiegand 42 interface a sequence of 42 pulses (bits) is transmitted on the 'WG0' and 'WG1' lines
Both output signals are open collector type. The connected access control terminal will pull up the lines to
+5-12V level in quiet state.
For a complete ID-code transmission 42 negative pulses with a duration of 100Gs each and delay of 2 mS
between consecutive pulses are sent.
Depending a logic '0' or '1' the pulses are transmitted on the 'WG0' or 'WG1' line.
The ID-code of the transponder is 40Bit and two parity bits are added for validation of the transmission. The
transmission starts with an added 'even' parity bit for the first 20 data bits and ends with added 'odd' parity
bit calculated from the later 20 data bits.
E (b0 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . b19)
Example:
1 0101 1101 0001 1010 0010
The parity bits are calculated for the first 21 bits of the transmission always having a even number of ones
while the last 21 bits will always have an odd number of ones.
d) Data format on the RS-485 interface
The data output on the RS-485 interface will start immediately after the transmission on the Wiegand
interface is completed.
The 40 bit of the ID-code are send as 5 consecutive bytes without any additional packet framing, header or
checksum added.
The transmission speed is 9600 bps (104GS per bit). The transmission uses 8 data bits, one start bit and
one stop bit (8N1).
Mounting instructions
The RFID reader can be mounted to an even surface using the 4 holes in the corners.
The antenna must be installed on a non-metallic surface since metal objects will degrade the reading
performance of the Antenna significantly.
Disposal
Electronic devices are recyclable waste and must not be disposed of in the household waste.
At the end of its service life, dispose of the product in accordance with applicable regulatory
guidelines.
You thus fulfill your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environment.
