This notice must be translated (possibly by the retailer), into the language of the country of use.
For your safety, comply strictly with the instructions for use, verification, maintenance and storage.
BERNER cannot be held liable for any direct or indirect accident occurring as a result of use other than provided for in this notice; do not use this equipment beyond its
capabilities! The user is responsible for the risks to which he is exposed. People who do not assume their responsibilities should not use this product. Before using this
equipment, you must read and understand all usage instructions in this guide.
USE AND PRECAUTIONS:
The energy absorber is a piece of personal protection equipment in accordance with EN 355:2002; it should be allocated to a single user (it can only be used by one person
at a time). The energy absorber consists of a single component with a controlled-tear strap and one or two lanyards depending on the model. In the event of a fall, the
controlled-tear strap (energy dissipater) deploys from inside its plastic cover, breaking the fall. User safety depends on the continuous efficiency of the equipment and a clear
understanding of the instructions in this users' manual.
Product markings should be checked periodically for legibility.
The absorber anchoring point must comply with EN 795 (R>12kN - EN795:2012 or R>10kN - EN795:1996).
For safety reasons, before each use, make sure that no obstacle can prevent the strap from unwinding normally.
One of the energy absorber ends is linked to a harness (EN361) fastening point (dorsal or sternal) and the other one to the anchoring point using connectors (EN362).
Avoid use near sharp edges, thin structures or corrosion, for they may affect the energy absorber performance.
If the risk evaluation conducted before work begins shows that the product will likely be used above an edge, we recommend taking the proper precautions to protect the
lanyard.
Check that the overall arrangement limits the pendulum effect in the event of a fall and that work can be carried out so as to limit the risk and the
height of a fall. For safety reasons. it is important to be careful to minimise the distance and risk of falling while working. Whenever possible, we
recommend setting the anchorage point above the user.
You shall find in the table hereunder examples of the fall clearance* for 2 lanyards of different length and reference number, and for 2 different
fall factors:
TOTAL LGTH OF EQUIPMENT :
Equipment reference number
Fall Factor
1
Fall clearance of the PPE
[!] The absorber and its connectors should not exceed 2 metres in length.
[!] Lanyards without energy absorbers must not be used as fall arrest systems.
[!] A Lanyard with energy absorber up to 2 m must not be extended with other components (lanyards, ...), it is ONLY possible to add connectors
at each end (provided that the lanyard is not equipped with connectors beforehand).
* It is essential for safety reason to verify the clearance at the work place before each use and during use in order to be sure there will be no collision
with the ground or obstacle in case of fall. Take particular attention to obstacles in movement (for example truck, mobile work platform, ...).
During use, take care of the amount of slack in the lanyard near a fall hazard. When adjusting the length of the lanyard, take care not to move into
an area where there is risk of fall.
An energy-absorbing lanyard cannot be used choke hitched.
Two separate lanyards, each with an energy absorber, should not be used side-by-side as a forked lanyard. The unused end of the forked lanyard
combined with an energy absorber should not be hooked to your harness, for the energy absorber may not play its part in case of fall.
Before and during use, we recommend that you take every precaution necessary for an eventual safe rescue.
This equipment is for the sole use of people trained, skilled and in good health, or under the supervision of a trained and skilled person.
Warning! Certain medical conditions may affect user safety. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
Be aware of the hazards that could reduce the performance of your equipment, and therefore the user's safety, if exposed to extreme temperatures
(< -30°C or > 50°C), prolonged exposure to the elements (UV rays, humidity), chemical agents, electrical constraints, twisting of the fall arrest system during use, sharp
edges, friction or cutting, etc.
Check the condition of the energy absorbing lanyard before every use: visual inspection to check the condition of the straps (no signs of cuts, burns or abnormal shrinkage),
the seams (no visible damage), the metal parts (no deformation or rust) and that the connectors work properly and the absorber has not been activated. The transparent sleeve
of the energy absorber must be present and not damaged. Product markings must remain legible. In the event of doubt regarding the condition of the device, or after a fall,
the energy absorbing lanyard must not be reused, should be withdrawn from service (marking it with the words "DO NOT USE" is recommended) and must be returned to
the manufacturer or to a qualified person appointed by the manufacturer.
It is forbidden to add, to remove or replace any energy absorber component whatsoever.
Temperature: use the equipment between - 30°C and + 50°C to avoid affecting its operation.
Chemical products: remove the lanyard from service should it be exposed to chemical products, solvents or combustible materials that could affect its operation.
TECHNICAL DATA: Material: polyamide and/or polyester –Breaking strength > 15 kN.
SUITABILITY FOR USE:
The energy absorbing lanyard must be used with a fall arrest system as defined in the product data sheet (see standard EN363) to guarantee that the dynamic force exerted
on the user during the arrest of a fall is maxi 6 kN. A fall arrest harness (EN361) is the only body-gripping device that may be used. It may be dangerous to create one's
own fall arrest system where each safety function can interfere with another safety function. Read the recommendations on using each component in the system before use.
VERIFICATION PROCEDURE:
Service life of the product is 10 years (in accordance with the annual examination by a competent person authorized by BERNER), although its actual service life may be
longer or shorter, depending on its usage and/or annual inspection results.
The product must be checked systematically in case of doubt or after a fall and at least every year by the manufacturer or his authorised representative, in order to guarantee
its resistance and thus the safety of the end-user. The product data sheet should be completed (by writing) after each verification; date of inspection and date of next inspection
must be indicated on the data sheet, it is also recommended to put date of next inspection on the product.
SERVICING AND STORAGE: (Comply strictly with these instructions)
During transport, keep the energy absorber in its packaging, well away from any cutting surface. Clean it with water, wipe it with a rag and hang it up in a well-ventilated
location, to let it dry naturally and away from a naked flame or heat source; follow the same procedure for components that have become damp during use. The energy
absorber should be stored in its packaging in a warm, dry, ventilated place, protected from sunlight, heat and chemicals.
