a person, (the manufacturer, supplier, designer
or installation technician), who ensures that the
electric trace heating system meets the require-
ments of Directive 2014/34/EU and, therefore,
assumes the responsibility of a manufacturer.
These issues cannot be clearly and comprehen-
sively answered for all electric trace heating sys-
tems, as it is necessary to distinguish between
the specific versions and techniques.
It is essential to point out that EU Type Exami-
nation Certificates are only valid for individual
components of a trace heating system and,
therefore, are not sufficient. As the temperatures
can vary according to the type of heating cable
and the installation conditions, each system has
to be planned individually and verified. Depend-
ing on the design, the manufacturer of the trace
heating system must fulfil the respective confor-
mity assessment procedures in accordance with
Directive 2014/34/EU for electrical equipment.
2.3
Category 3 applications
(Zones 2 and 22)
In accordance with Directive 2014/34/EU, Cate-
gory 3 systems do not have to be certified by an
authorized body. However, the manufacturer is
obliged to apply the modules for conformity
assessment described in Annex VIII (Internal
production control) and to carry out the tests
according to the relevant standards of the series
EN IEC 60079. The manufacturer compiles an
EU Declaration of Conformity for the complete
trace heating system and technical documents
that allow an assessment of conformity with the
requirements of the directive.
3.
Operating modes of trace heating
systems
3.1
Stabilized operation
An electric trace heating system must be
designed in such a way that, even under fore-
seeable fault conditions, the surface tempera-
ture is limited to the temperature class specified
by the operator.
