1.
General
A trace heating system is mainly used for main-
taining or raising the temperature of piping,
tanks and vessels. A complete trace heating sys-
tem comprises:
−
heating cable or heating mats;
−
temperature controller and safety tempera-
ture limiter, depending on the operation
mode;
−
installation accessories, such as connec-
tion sets, connectors and terminal boxes;
−
thermal insulation and weather protection
(cladding).
All the components required for the safe and
intended use of an electric trace heating system
have undergone a conformity assessment pro-
cedure.
A respective marking and system documenta-
tion, which comprises an instruction manual,
planning and calculation documents, an EU
Declaration of Conformity and a separate EU
Type Examination Certificate, shall be available
for the complete trace heating system.

Directive 2014/34/EU
2.1
General
The required measures for the explosion protec-
tion of electric trace heating systems are depen-
dent on the respective category according to
Directive 2014/34/EU (zone classification), the
explosion group, the temperature class and the
ambient temperature.
2.2
Category 2 applications
(Zones 1 and 21)
Electric trace heating systems for use in haz-
ardous areas are electrical equipment in accor-
dance with Directive 2014/34/EU. In many cases
certain properties that are relevant for the safe
operation, in particular the temperature class,
are determined by the design and the installa-
tion. For this reason it is necessary to take these
special conditions into consideration when plac-
ing the systems on the market.
This also means that certain special require-
ments also apply for the installation of these
products. It is particularly important to nominate
