6.4 Tapered threads (NPT)
Connections with tapered threads (NPT) are self-sealing and normally must not be sealed. It
should be checked whether it may be necessary to seal them additionally with Teflon tape or
hemp. The threads must be lubricated with a suitable lubricant before fitting.
Tighten the threads by hand when carrying out the final assembly on the plant. This will
correspond to the delivery status of the premounted components. The final tightening and sealing
must be made with a spanner (1.5 to 3 rotations).
7. Notes for mounting and operating in hazardous areas (Europe)
Special conditions for safe use
The thermometer must be used with a power limitation circuit, which is limited to a Pmax for
Category 1 application in 2-fault safety and for Category 2 applications in 1-fault safety (e.g. intrin-
sically safe circuits for ia and/or ib).
The thermometer must be equipped with cable entries and blanking plugs that are certified at
least to EN 50 014:1992 and EN 50 018: 1994. The temperature resistance must correspond, at
minimum, to the relevant approved ambient temperature range.
The thermometer should be fitted with a connecting cable whose temperature resistance must
correspond, at minimum, to the relevant approved ambient temperature range.
The thermometer is not marked with the permissible medium temperature. The correlation
between the temperature class, the permissible ambient temperature (Tamb), the minimum neck
length (MH) and the max. temperature at the thermowell (Category 1/2) or at the measuring
element (Category 2) should be taken from the table (see chapter 2.3.1) or from the type exami-
nation certificate.
