Periodic Phenomena
Kundt's tube with analog outputs
Ref : 22204
This observation is in accordance with the study in three dimensions of the sound wave,
which is not plane if we consider the diameter of the tube in relation to its length (1/10 ratio).
One can refer to the article written by R. Moreau in BUP no. 742, p. 385 on this subject.
The modelled curve corresponds to the function: U
With the numerical values given by Généris, we obtain:

It is also possible to select other frequencies to obtain different standing wave systems.
1. From the relation N = k. v / 2L, we select k = 2, therefore N = 696 Hz.
The recording is done in the same conditions and the following graph is obtained:
The experimental result corresponds well to the theoretical study: presence of two
antinodes and three nodes. We notice a discrepancy of the standing system towards the
right, by about 2 cm.

 = 9.87 dm gives a wave length of 0.987 m
To deduce the speed of sound at ambient temperature, we express v=N.
The result gives v = 346 x 0.987 = 341.5 m.s
the experiment's temperature 22 °C is 346 m.s
thus 1.3 %).
