Instruments with narrow lumens

Procedure using a simple instrument as an example

Instruments with easily accessible surfaces can be placed in
a PE bag and samples obtained through elution.
Samples from joints and hinges of e.g. artery forceps must
be obtained through elution, using 2 ml of solution in a 50 ml
tall beaker. The beaker is held at an angle and instruments
are opened and closed several times.
On narrow-lumened instruments, a syringe should be used to
rinse through the inner surfaces of the lumen for the assay
and the SDS solution collected in a beaker. This process
should be repeated after 5 minutes, recharging the syringe
with the SDS solution from the beaker. Repeat twice more as
necessary.
The SDS solution for testing and the reagent solutions
should be at room temperature, i.e. 20 °C + 2/- 1 °C.
a Using a disposable syringe, inject 5 ml of the SDS solution
into a PE bag.
b Place the instrument in the PE bag and seal.
c Elute the instrument by turning the bag. Make sure that
moving parts such as joints move.
d Wait 10 - 15 minutes, then elute the instrument again.
