17 - Safety Recommendations

The safety of your children depends on you alone. The risk is greatest for children under five
years old. Accidents do not only happen to others. Be ready to deal with any emergency.
A reminder of some basic safety rules:
Children must be constantly and carefully supervised.
Designate one person responsible for safety.
Strengthen safety precautions when there are a number of people using the pool.
Never leave a child alone near a swimming pool.
Never leave a child unattended by an adult if he/she doesn't know how to swim.
Never let a child swim alone.
Insist that all non-swimmers wear flotation aids.
Ensure children wear armbands or appropriate bathing rings, when near the pool.
Teach your children to swim as soon as possible.
Wet your neck, arms and legs before entering the water.
Do not enter the water suddenly, especially after a meal, a long period of sunbathing or an intense
effort.
Teach safety procedures, especially those specific to children.
Forbid jumping or diving in the presence of young children.
Forbid running or boisterous games in and around the pool.
Do not allow access to the pool to a child who cannot swim well and who is not accompanied in the
water.
Do not walk along the edge of the pool (except if the pool is set in the ground).
Do not climb or sit on the wall.
The ladder should always be level and on a solid base.
Always face the ladder when climbing into or out of the pool.
Never use the ladder for any purpose other than that for which it was intended, i.e. climbing into and
out of the pool. It is not designed for jumping or diving.
Do not leave toys in or close to the pool if no one is watching over it.
Check from time to time that all the parts of the pool are in good condition. Tighten screws and nuts.
Never modify or remove parts and never pierce holes in the pool.
Ensure that the water is always clear and clean.
Follow installation instructions scrupulously, and refer to precautions for use and safe storage
indicated on the packaging of water treatment products.
Store water treatment products out of the reach of children.
Memorise and display emergency telephone numbers near the pool (fire and rescue, ambulance,
anti-poison centre).
Do not operate the filter when the pool is in use.
Provide equipment that may improve safety. This equipment is an aid to safety and should
under no circumstances replace close supervision.
Safety fence, with the gate kept closed at all times.
Manual or automatic protective cover, correctly installed and attached.
Electronic presence or fall sensor, switched on and in good working order.
Telephone within easy access of the pool (portable or otherwise).
Lifebuoy and pole next to the pool.
In the event of an accident:
Get the child out of the water as quickly as possible.
Immediately call the emergency services and follow the instructions given to you.
Replace wet clothes with warm blankets.
