Electrical installation in DMX-mode:
The DMX-protocol is a widely used high speed signal to control intelligent light
equipment. You need to "daisy chain" your DMX controller and all the connected
units with a good quality balanced cable.
Both XLR-3pin and XLR-5pin connectors are used, however XLR-3pin is more
popular because these cables are compatible with balanced audio cables.
Pin layout XLR-3pin:
Pin1 = GND ~
Pin2 = Negative
signal (-) ~ Pin3 = Positive signal (+)
Pin layout XLR-5pin:
Pin1 = GND ~
Pin2 = Negative
signal (-) ~ Pin3 = Positive signal (+) ~ Pins4+5 not used.
To prevent strange behavior of the light effects, due
to interferences, you must use a 90Ω to 120Ω
terminator at the end of the chain. Never use Y-
splitter cables, this simply won't work!
In order to make things easy for DMX-programming,
a certain "logical order" should be followed while
daisy chaining the panels. Please refer to the drawing
which shows a setup example for 16panels. The
panels are installed with the displays facing down.
Make sure that all units are connected to the mains.
Each light effect in the chain needs to have its proper starting address so it knows which commands
from the controller it has to decode. In the next section you will learn how to set the DMX addresses.
HOW TO SET THE RIGHT STARTING ADDRESS:
Refer to the previous chapter (DMX-512 address setting) to learn how to set the starting address on this
unit. The starting address of each unit is very important. Depending on the controller, number of panels
and available DMX-channels you can choose 2 different DMX-channel setups for the panels:
All panels set in 4CH mode:
The 4 subpanels inside each unit will show the same output, therefore
they all have the same DMX-address. In the example drawing we start
from start address 001 for the panel. Some example addressing for the
4x4 matrix shown above:
PANEL1: start address = 001
PANEL2: start address = 005
PANEL3: start address = 009
...
PANEL12: start address = 045
...
For the 4x4 matrix example you need a total of 64 DMX-addresses.
All panels set in 16CH mode:
The 4 subpanels inside each unit will show different output, therefore
they all have different DMX-addresses. In the example drawing we start
from start address 001 for the panel. Some example addressing for the
4x4 matrix shown above:
PANEL1: start address = 001
PANEL2: start address = 017
PANEL3: start address = 033
...
PANEL12: start address = 177
...
For the 4x4 matrix example you need a total of 256 DMX-addresses.
