2. Forced ventilation
Forced cooling using a fan is sometimes required
(Fig. #5). Please refer to the following recommen-
dations:
• Consider the maximum ambient temperature of the
installation site including the heating effect of the
capacitor installation itself.
• Consider the heat dissipated from all the com-
ponents and apparatus in the cubicle: reactors,
capacitors, contactors, fuses, etc.
• Consider the maximum permissible temperatures
for all the components and apparatus.
• Consider how to direct the airflow with respect to
the position of the capacitors (Fig. #5).
3. The use of an overtemperature protection is rec-
ommended in order to switch the bank off in case of
fan failure or overtemperature due to other cause.
4. Regular maintenance and cleaning of any filters is
necessary. Without regular cleaning the cooling sys-
tem may become inefficient.
Harmonics
Installation of capacitors on networks disturbed by
harmonics may require special precautions especially
when there is a risk of resonance phenomena.
QCap group assembly
Directly interconnecting several QCap unit is not al-
lowed. To increase the power of one step, the QCap
units must be put in parallel and connected directly
to the contactor or to the reactor.
QCap fixation
Fix each QCap unit through its M12 threaded mount-
ing stud at the bottom of the capacitor (recom-
mended torque: 10Nm).
For proper ventilation separate the QCap unit by 30
mm/1.18 inches from each other.
Make sure that the rigidity of the support and the
screws are sufficient to bear the weight of the QCap
capacitor unit(s).
Washer must be used to allow for the ground conti-
nuity and for the temperature variations.
Electrical connection
Cables must be long and flexible enough in order to
allow the cover to expand in case the overpressure
safety device must operate.
Cables should be rated at minimum 1.5 times the
nominal capacitor current.
The cables must be flexible, made of copper, and
their size should not exceed 16 mm²/0.025 in²
(AWG4).
Depending on the size of cable used, the lugs of cor-
rect size should be fitted on the cable before making
the electrical connection. Non-isolated cable lugs are
recommended. In case isolated cable lugs are used,
the active part length of the lugs should be com-
prised between 20-25 mm/0.79-0.98 in.
The lug must be properly fixed using the correct tool.
The cable with lug mounted on it should be inserted
in the cage type terminals of the QCap. While tight-
ening the screw, a torque of 2Nm/17.7in.lbs. should
be applied for proper electrical connection, without
damaging the cable.
Before inserting the wires inside the QCap terminals,
make sure the terminal screws are completely loos-
ened (screwdriver tip: we recommend the PH2 spe-
cial for electricians.) Care should be taken to avoid
the strands from going apart while inserting the ca-
ble in the QCap terminals.
Ensure that all connections are tight. Torque must be
2Nm/17.7in.lbs.
Commissioning
With the equipment isolated from the supply, check:
• Cabling is properly connected;
• Ambient ventilation is adequate;
• Correct tightness of the connections.
Maintenance
1. Ensure safety procedures are completed (see para-
graph "Safety")
2. Annual maintenance should include:
• Removal of dust deposits, cleaning of all parts;
• Check of tightness of all electrical connections;
• Check of ambient temperature;
• Check the enclosure is not damaged.
It is recommended to replace the QCap capacitors
after 15 years from the manufacturing date. This is
considering that the disconnecting system may not
work properly after this duration due to ageing of
plastic material used in it.
Recycling
Defective units are inert and present no environmen-
tal hazard. They can be destroyed in class II channels.
Besides, some internal parts may present a danger
for people safety when dismantled. It is therefore
recommended not to open the units for eventual re-
cycling.
